Contract Operator information

What is a contract operator?

Contract operators are professionals hired on a contractual basis to manage and oversee the daily operations of facilities, equipment, or processes, often in industries like oil and gas, utilities, or manufacturing. They are responsible for ensuring that operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently according to established standards and regulations. Unlike permanent employees, contract operators work for a specific period or project duration and may serve multiple clients or sites. Their duties can include monitoring equipment, performing maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and completing necessary documentation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract operator?

To thrive as a Contract Operator, you generally need a solid understanding of process operations, safety protocols, and basic mechanical or technical knowledge, often gained through experience or vocational training. Familiarity with SCADA systems, process control software, and industry certifications such as OSHA or HAZMAT are typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These qualifications ensure safe and efficient operations, regulatory compliance, and quick response to any issues in industrial or oil and gas environments.

What are some common challenges faced by contract operators in managing multiple client sites?

Contract Operators often oversee operations at several client locations, which can present challenges such as balancing competing priorities, adapting to different facility protocols, and ensuring consistent safety and compliance standards. Effective time management and strong communication skills are essential to address diverse operational needs and client expectations. Additionally, staying up-to-date with regulatory requirements and quickly resolving issues at various sites can be demanding but also rewarding for those who thrive in dynamic environments.

What is the difference between Contract Operator vs Plant Operator?

AspectContract OperatorPlant Operator

Job description

Who Are We?
Do you want to help to make the world a better place? Join our team! At TSI our vision is to create a better world by helping to protect people, products and the environment. We are proud of the wide range of solutions we provide that solve our customer's problems around the world. From helping to ensure worker safety and understanding air quality to supporting complex highly technical industries such as pharmaceuticals manufacturing, semiconductor, and research customers, TSI employees are part of something special with a purpose.

Contract Attorney at TSI

TSI is seeking a Contract Attorney to review and negotiate contracts carrying moderate to high risk to the company, including internationally. Reporting directly to TSI's Group President, this role oversees a range of legal and contractual processes and partners closely with internal stakeholders and outside counsel to keep the business compliant and protected. The work often goes beyond routine agreements, requiring the attorney to develop specialized contract vehicles and negotiation strategies tailored to complex business needs. Success depends on strong independent judgment - identifying and resolving significant issues, and, when necessary, building new contract policies and processes to support evolving business goals.

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with TSI, you will be responsible for:

  • Review, draft, and negotiate a range of commercial contracts, including those with moderate to high-risk exposure (e.g., master service agreements, vendor and supplier contracts, licensing agreements, partnership and channel agreements)
  • Develop specialized contract structures and negotiation strategies for non-standard or complex business arrangements
  • Identify, assess, and resolve significant legal and business risk issues within contract terms
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders on high-stakes or precedent-setting agreements, including working in collaboration with outside counsel
  • Partner with business leaders and internal stakeholders (sales, operations, engineering, marketing, finance) to align contract terms with business objectives
  • Lead the development and rollout of new or updated contract policies, templates, and processes to improve efficiency and consistency
  • Advise internal teams on contractual rights, obligations, and risk implications in plain, actionable language
  • Manage a high-volume contract pipeline, prioritizing effectively without compromising thoroughness
  • Stay current on relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards that affect contract terms and enforceability

What Do You Need?
Required

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school and active license to practice law in Minnesota (or ability to obtain via reciprocity within a defined timeframe)
  • 5+ years of experience in contract law, commercial transactions, or a related legal practice area, including significant in-house experience
  • Demonstrated track record of independently analyzing and resolving complex, high-risk contract issues
  • Strong negotiation skills with a history of balancing legal risk against business needs at a senior level
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate legal concepts for non-legal audiences, including executives
  • Sound judgment and comfort operating with ambiguity on novel or non-routine matters

PREFERRED

  • Experience leading the development or overhaul of contract policies, playbooks, or templates at an organizational level
  • Familiarity with industry-specific contracts relevant to TSI
  • Experience working cross-functionally with procurement, finance, or sales leadership

TRAVEL

Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
