What is a contract NP?

Contract NPs, or contract nurse practitioners, are advanced practice registered nurses who work on a contractual basis rather than as full-time employees. They may be hired by clinics, hospitals, or telehealth companies to provide healthcare services for a set period or a specific project. This flexible arrangement allows NPs to work in various settings, manage their own schedules, and often command higher hourly rates. Contract NPs typically perform similar duties to staff NPs, including diagnosing conditions, prescribing medication, and managing patient care.

What are common challenges faced by contract NPs and how can they be managed?

Contract Nurse Practitioners often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to different clinical environments, varying documentation systems, and integrating with new healthcare teams. To manage these, it's helpful to have strong communication skills, flexibility, and a proactive approach to learning each facility's protocols. Building rapport with staff and seeking clarification on workflow expectations early can ease transitions and ensure high-quality patient care. Additionally, staying organized and keeping up-to-date with licensure and credentialing requirements is essential for success in contract roles.

Registered Nurses provide direct patient care with RN licensure. While both roles work in healthcare environments, NPs typically have more autonomy and advanced credentials, making them suitable for contract positions requiring advanced practice skills.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a contract NP?

To thrive as a Contract Nurse Practitioner (NP), you need advanced clinical expertise, a Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing, and a valid NP license for the state of practice. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, telehealth platforms, and evidence-based practice guidelines is typically required. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and adaptability help set contract NPs apart, especially when working in diverse or changing clinical environments. These skills and qualities ensure effective patient care, smooth integration into various healthcare teams, and successful management of flexible work assignments.

Job description

  • Olympus Health coordinates and performs disability determination physicals for various local and governmental agencies such as Medicare and the Social Security Administration in Georgia and multiple other states around the country.
  • We provide this service in the area 1-2 days per month, on Saturdays, so you don’t need to be concerned about conflicts to your personal or professional time elsewhere! Generally, each clinic (depending on the number of patients scheduled) will be scheduled from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

PERTINENT INFORMATION

  • As the provider, you will provide disability examinations and evaluations that primarily test the claimant’s function and range of motion. The evaluation you will perform will be solely in connection with the determination of the patient’s entitlement to Social Security disability or Medicaid benefits. You will not be establishing a doctor-patient relationship nor be providing any diagnosis, advice, or treatment to the claimants, nor will you be deciding whether the claimant is eligible for benefits. You will be provided with a clear template of specific tests to perform and document your assessment of such tests.
  • We schedule each clinic about 6-8 weeks in advance and can work around your schedule as a resident. Payment is issued immediately upon completion of the charts, so there is no waiting for billing.
  • We will pay $50 per patient seen for the conducting of these physicals. That comes out to be about $80-$100 an hour. On average you can expect to conduct about 14-16 physicals during the 1 day/month clinic.
