What is a contract notary?

A Contract Notary is a commissioned notary public who verifies signatures, administers oaths, and ensures the authenticity of legal documents. They often work independently or on a contract basis with businesses, law firms, or real estate agencies. Their primary responsibility is to prevent fraud by confirming the identities of signers and ensuring they are signing willingly. Many Contract Notaries also handle loan signings, affidavits, and other official documents.

What does a contract notary do?

A Contract Notary's day typically involves traveling to client locations or working remotely to witness and notarize signatures on legal documents, such as contracts, affidavits, and real estate forms. You will verify identities, ensure documents are complete, and keep accurate records in your notary journal. Work can vary from scheduled appointments to urgent, same-day requests, offering flexibility but requiring a high level of reliability. Collaboration is often independent, but you may interact with law offices, title companies, or individual clients depending on assignments. This variety makes the role dynamic and engaging for those who value autonomy and direct client interaction.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a contract notary?

To thrive as a Contract Notary, you need comprehensive knowledge of notary laws and procedures, attention to detail, and a valid state notary commission. Familiarity with notary journals, electronic notarization platforms, and identity verification tools is often required. Excellent communication, professionalism, and the ability to maintain confidentiality set top performers apart. These skills are critical to ensure the legality and integrity of notarized documents while building trust with clients and minimizing errors.

Can I do contract notary work as a side hustle?

Contract notary work can often be done as a side hustle, as it typically involves providing notarization services on a flexible schedule. However, it requires proper certification, adherence to state laws, and sometimes a mobile or remote setup, making it suitable for part-time or supplemental income. Many notaries choose to work evenings or weekends to accommodate clients' needs.

Can you notarize contracts?

A contract notary is authorized to notarize contracts by verifying the identities of signers and witnessing their signatures. Notarization typically requires the signer to appear in person and provide valid identification; the notary then affixes a seal or stamp to confirm the authenticity of the signatures. Proper training and certification are often required to perform notarizations legally and accurately.

Contractor

Job description

Position Reference: 01CLFCJ003
CLFC is building its Georgia court reporting roster to support federal deposition and proceeding coverage across the Northern District. We contract and self-perform this work, and reporters on the roster are named to the Government with their credentials attached.
The roster is non-exclusive. Most of our reporters carry their own clients and add CLFC federal assignments alongside an existing caseload. You keep full control of your calendar.
Engagement model: appearance plus transcript, the standard freelance deposition structure. This is not a flat-hourly digital reporting role and it is not a salaried court position.
Schedule: assignment based. You accept or decline each assignment based on your own availability.
Key Responsibilities
  • Capture a complete, certified and accurate verbatim record.
  • Provide realtime transcription where the proceeding requires it.
  • Administer the oath as a commissioned notary in the state of performance.
  • Attach the reporter certification to each original transcript in the form the contract prescribes.
  • Produce certified transcripts to contract format and turnaround standards, including expedited tiers.
  • Maintain a documented chain of custody for all notes, media and exhibits.
  • Deliver transcripts through secure, encrypted channels within the required turnaround.
  • Maintain confidentiality in secure and grand jury adjacent settings.
  • Coordinate scheduling, claims and confirmations through the CLFC BRIDGE App.
Required Qualifications
  • Georgia Certified Court Reporter (CCR) in good standing. Georgia law requires a certified court reporter for depositions taken in the state.
  • Active notary commission in the state of performance.
  • Qualified in verbatim capture and computer aided transcription.
  • U.S. citizen or national, or lawful permanent resident seeking citizenship, with U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years, for Department of Justice suitability.
  • Ability to pass a federal background investigation where the assignment requires it.
  • Availability to travel to assignment locations within the assigned Georgia markets.

Georgia recognises NCRA, NVRA and AAERT national certification as pathways to the CCR. Stenographic, voice writing and digital reporters who hold a current Georgia CCR are all eligible for this roster.
Strongly Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Professional Reporter (RPR), Registered Merit Reporter (RMR) or Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR).
  • Realtime transcription experience in federal proceedings.
  • Experience supporting a U.S. Attorney's Office or U.S. District Court.
  • Experience working alongside a legal videographer on a synchronised record.
  • Availability across more than one of the five Georgia locations.
Compensation and Engagement Details
  • $78,000 to $92,000 annually.
  • Independent Contractor (1099) engagement, assignment based.
  • Travel reimbursed per contract and assignment terms.
  • Assignments are offered as they arise and are not guaranteed. You accept or decline each one.
  • Assignment dispatch, claims, confirmations and invoicing handoff are managed through the CLFC BRIDGE App, so scheduling and paperwork stay off your desk.
  • We are glad to walk through the full compensation structure and how assignments are paid when we speak.
About CLFC Healthcare and Communications
