Job description

Overview
The Curriculum and Instruction Division at the Vermont Agency of Education is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Curriculum & Instruction Coach position.
This role is responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing the intensive support, coaching, and systems development for the Read Vermont comprehensive approach to improve teaching and learning in literacy, and providing support, as needed, to the Count on Vermont approach to improving teaching and learning mathematics by sharing best practices in coaching.
The Coach is involved in the management of a cadre of systems/regional coaches and in developing the infrastructure intended to promote systemic change in literacy practices, as well as coherence in curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The individual in this position will lead intensive coaching with school leaders, educators, and instructional coaches on implementing evidence-based practices and high-quality curricular programs and materials. They will require deep content and pedagogical knowledge of early literacy curricular programs and practices, as well as some knowledge in mathematical programs and practices. The individual in this position will engage in significant professional development and networking to maintain the most current knowledge and understanding of research and underlying evidence. They also will ensure relevant legislative requirements, rules and regulations are fulfilled with integrity.
This position is responsible for:
  • Designing and creating systems to address specific educational and program goals.
  • Formulating educational organizational and operational plans, grants, contracts or procedures for achieving program goals.
  • Promoting partnerships with and providing support to groups/organizations/stakeholders
  • Representing AOE on committees, boards or councils.
  • Providing technical assistance and training to schools, community groups and other organizations.
  • Providing leadership, oversight and support to schools/SUS on needs assessments, planning, implementation and documenting program effectiveness and compliance with appropriate educational guidelines.
  • Advising schools, organizations or the general public about specific programs
  • Serving as a statewide subject area expert providing specific consulting services to school districts, professional organizations, and other state and local agencies.
  • Managing, and overseeing management of projects related to program objectives
  • Conducting research and developing knowledge in area of expertise
  • Staying current on research/laws/rules in relevant area of expertise
  • Submitting data collection, reports, etc. for compliance related items
  • Engaging in professional learning in relevant area of expertise, aligned to AOE mission, vision, and strategic priorities
  • Presenting/reporting to Boards and providing legislative testimony, as needed
  • Working with management to ensure the coordination of group activities with the goals and objectives of the AOE and representing the division at scheduled meetings

Environmental Factors
Normal office working conditions generally prevail. Incumbent must be able to interact, work, and deal with Department staff, educators, state, federal, and local officials, and the general public. Evening and weekend work may be required. Considerable travel is necessary for which private means of transportation must be available
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in education, public administration, or related field AND five (5) years or more of experience in education or human services, INCLUDING one (1) year or more with planning, policy, program administration or a program evaluation role AND two (2) years or more of supervisory experience.
OR
Bachelor's degree in education, public administration, or related field AND seven (7) years or more of experience in education or human services, INCLUDING one (1) year or more with planning, policy, program administration or a program evaluation role AND two (2) years or more of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
The candidate must possess considerable knowledge and abilities in the following areas:
  • Planning, developing, and coordinating programs and initiatives.
  • Considerable knowledge in related laws, rules, regulations
  • Ability to prepare reports of considerable complexity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to provide team leadership, support, and oversight for division core work programs and processes, and/or other cross division programs
  • Ability to supervise individuals within the team and ensure work is coordinated
  • Expertise in related laws, rules, regulations
