Job description

Description
Founded in 1945, the University of Washington (UW) School of Dentistry is internationally recognized for excellence in dental education, research and patient care. We attract top-tier faculty and students who are committed to advancing oral health through innovation, scholarship and clinical expertise. It serves as a center of excellence in orofacial healthcare for Washington state and the Pacific Northwest. Please visit the UW School of Dentistry Profile.
The UW is one of the world's preeminent research universities and the oldest public university in the Pacific Northwest. It is an internationally ranked public university, serving diverse students, faculty, and staff, and is committed to educating and working in a multicultural environment. The institution engages in teaching, research, and service. It is both a state government institution and a public university, and meets the federal requirement of a "public service organization" as defined by the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
The UW School of Dentistry is a 12-month service school. The Department of Periodontics is seeking a non-tenure eligible full-time Assistant Professor Without Tenure by reason of funding (WOT) position to join a dynamic and accomplished academic program dedicated to excellence in education and research. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of periodontology through innovative teaching, impactful research, and meaningful service.
The successful applicant will be expected to engage in teaching, be active in professional organizations and be committed to academic excellence. Candidates are encouraged to demonstrate their ability to innovate and create teaching/research/service models that incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Key responsibilities and duties
This position involves teaching and mentoring at the predoctoral and graduate levels, focused on imparting a fundamental understanding of oral diseases, primarily periodontal disease, their etiology, prevention and treatment, and disease connections with systemic health conditions. This position will support curriculum development associated with oral microbiology and the role of bacteria in causing oral diseases. This position will supervise predoctoral and graduate student research projects, including clinical-focused graduate students within the periodontics program. This position will be expected to engage in continuing dental education and school/university-wide service.
Teaching
• Direct the Foundational Course on Oral Microbiology for first-year dental students
• Lead graduate level courses in Periodontics (Immunology course)
• Lead graduate-level courses in Oral Health Sciences
• Mentor graduate periodontics students on master's research projects, with a focus on enhancing scientific rigor and research methodologies.
• Provide statistical analysis support for graduate-level periodontal research projects.
• Support and engage students from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds.
• Supervise predoctoral and graduate student research projects.
• The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with colleagues and develop strong interpersonal skills.
• Contribute to the department's teaching mission by serving on committees and collaborating with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to advance public health.
Research
Develop and maintain a high-impact research program with sustained external funding through grants, sponsorships, or partnerships.
• Manage government and industry-sponsored grants and contracts in the center.
• Manage large-scale processing of clinical samples.
• Development, implementation, and integration of cutting-edge and reproducible bioinformatic workflows for
multi-omic data with associated statistical analyses into high impact publication ready results.
• Collaborate with clinical faculty on oral health clinical studies.
• Disseminate scholarly work to diverse audiences through:
o Peer-reviewed publications
o Community reports and presentations at national and international meetings
• Serve as Associate Director of the UW Clinical Oral Microbiome Research Center (COMRC)
The COMRC performs wet-lab and bioinformatic services for grant and contract work. The COMRC houses sequencing instrumentation (Illumina Miseq) and multiplex immunoassay platform (Intelliflex xMAP) as well as high throughput automated and semi-automated instruments to meet milestones for grant and contract work. A description of the COMRC is provided in the center's webpage (https://research.dental.uw.edu/comrc/).
Salary and Benefits
The base salary range for this position will be $6,250.00 - $7,873.00 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
A summary of benefits associated with this title/rank can be found at https://hr.uw.edu/benefits/benefits-orientation/benefit-summary-pdfs/
Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a PhD degree (or foreign equivalent) in a relevant field, and a demonstration of teaching and research ability that evidence promise of a successful career. The candidate will have a strong record of research and at least three years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent, as well as a total of three to 4 years of experience working on microbiome-related research. Please note that these are not separate requirements for full-time experience; all requirements can be met with a total of 3 years of experience at the postdoctoral level (or equivalent) working on microbiome-related research.
Application Instructions
Applications, including a letter of interest, CV, and list of three references (name, work title, affiliated institution, phone number and email address), should be addressed to the attention of Dr. Frank A. Roberts, Professor and Chair, Department of Periodontology, University of Washington School of Dentistry.
