Job Description:

MAJOR PURPOSE:
  • Performs instrumented tests using existing procedures to verify that machine performance meets the product specification.
  • Supports all product groups in the product verification and validation process.
MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Description of the major duties performed in this job.
  • Designs, schedules and performs field and/or lab tests to validate new product designs.
  • Develops programs for data acquisition.
  • Collects and installs instrumentation for test.
  • Compiles test reports that document procedures and communicates results and guidance to design group.
  • Gives work direction to test operators.
  • Coordinates interaction with experimental shop and field test to ensure test activities correlate with available parts and current design iteration.
  • Entry level Engineers that are comfortable being hands on, would be a good target.
    Local candidates will be given preference (We don't want to see Master's degree candidates or higher).
Summary:
  • We are seeking a detail-oriented and skilled Materials Lab Technician to join our team.
  • This role will support the Additive Manufacturing Lab with the setup and operation of multiple 3D printers, execute Material Wear Testing, and perform metallurgical sample preparation, testing and characterizations.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background with a focus on manufacturing processes and materials.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Set up, operate and maintain material lab equipment including metal & plastic 3D printers, sectioning saws, mounting press, grinding/polishing equipment, hardness testers, and wear testing equipment in accordance with established procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Monitor 3D printing processes to ensure part quality, troubleshoot issues, and make necessary adjustments to optimize print parameters.
  • Perform post-processing of 3D printed material tasks such as part removal, sanding, machining, and finishing to meet specific requirements.
  • Prepare sample specimens for material testing and characterizations such as wear test coupons, adhesive lap shear samples, and metallographic mounts.
  • Conduct material testing such as wear testing, hardness testing and microstructure imaging and compile results into presentable reports through Lab Work Request System.
  • Collaborate with other Material Lab Personnel and the lab work requestors providing feedback on manufacturing and characterization feasibility of the various lab requests.
  • Maintain detailed records of 3D printing parameters, material usage, and part quality to support lab quality control and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and calibration of 3D printing equipment and material lab machines to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; relevant technical certification or associate degree preferred.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing principles, including knowledge of various manufacturing technologies, materials, and post-processing techniques.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Programs (Outlook, TEAMS, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc).
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • A strong candidate would have experience operating manufacturing machines and/or material testing equipment.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to lift and maneuver heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) in a laboratory environment.
  • Comfort working with various tools and equipment for post-processing tasks.
