Job description

Urschel, a 100% employee-owned company, is seeking a Risk Engineer to evaluate machine designs for compliance with applicable safety standards and industry regulations, and to develop solutions that minimize or eliminate operator risk. This role provides technical leadership focused on regulatory compliance, hazard identification, risk assessment and cost-effective risk management for Urschel customers. This onsite position reports to the Electrical Engineering Manager and is based at our corporate Headquarters in Chesterton, Indiana.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct hazard analysis and risk assessments;
  • Evaluate and ensure the safety and regulatory compliance of machine design and part specifications;
  • Reviewing certified prints for safety and adequate guarding;
  • Develop, review, and maintain safety documentation, technical reports, and compliance certifications;
  • Stay current with regulations and standards related to industrial food processing machinery and food contact materials;
  • Provide guidance to engineers for adherence to standards, regulatory requirements, and sanitary design principles;
  • Investigate incidents and near misses and develop solutions for incorporation into future designs or procedures;
  • Attend trade shows to understand customer needs.

The qualified candidate will possess, at a minimum, a bachelor's degree in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and three or more years of experience working in a manufacturing setting. Experience in the Food Industry and knowledge of food processing machines preferred. Prior experience performing risk assessments on machines preferred. Knowledge of ANSI, OSHA, ISO, NFPA, EN, and UL standards pertaining to machine guarding and electrical conformance is preferred. Must possess the ability to review and analyze engineering drawings and reports and the ability to communicate effectively with customers. Experience with CE compliance a plus.
