BWXT is currently seeking a Thermal Hydraulic Design Engineer for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!
BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT's innovation hub. BWXT's Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.
The Advanced Technologies (AT) group at BWXT designs and develops innovative new nuclear reactors and related systems for internal and external customers. AT Engineering is seeking a Thermal Hydraulic Design Engineer with experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to assist in the development of these systems.

Job Description / Duties:
  • Perform thermal-hydraulic analysis of advanced nuclear reactor designs, which includes a variety of fuel systems, cycle and coolant types.
  • Control a broad scope of studies, from preconceptual through final design.
  • Perform a range of reactor thermal analysis, including using CFD, from quick scoping to design quality.
  • Support the development of reactor thermal modeling, simulation, and optimization.
  • Interact with neutronic core design, fuel performance, mechanical, and system engineers.
  • Work in a reactor design team contributing to a variety of projects.
  • Support development of a reactor thermal-hydraulic engineering qualification program.

Job Qualifications / Requirements:
  • A Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline is required.
  • A minimum of twenty (20) years of relevant experience is required.
  • Must be a strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Must be able to learn a variety of new procedures, processes and tools while maintaining various stages of production.
  • Must possess understanding of design control and configuration control concepts and project engineering activities (task plans, schedules).
  • Travel (5-10%) domestic and international is required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Additional Desired Skillsets:
  • PhD in Chemical, Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Prior experience with verification and validation of thermal analysis tools.
  • Prior experience with the CFD tools Ansys Fluent and Fluent Meshing
  • Familiarity with plant analysis tools such as RELAP5-3D or TRACE. Experience with subchannel codes.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as FORTRAN, Python, C, C++ in a Linux environment.

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $128,000.00 and $189,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
