What is a contract graphic designer?

Contract graphic designers are creative professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to design visual content such as logos, marketing materials, websites, and more. Unlike full-time employees, they typically work for multiple clients or agencies, often remotely or on-site as needed. Their work scope is defined by a contract, which outlines the project deliverables, timeline, and payment terms. This arrangement allows businesses to access specialized design skills for specific projects without committing to a long-term hire.

What does a contract graphic designer do?

A contract graphic designer works on design projects on a freelance basis. As an independent contractor, your duties include communicating with clients to define their needs for each project. You create the visual elements for websites, advertisements, marketing materials, or any visual asset required by the client. You can also work on branding campaigns or help a company rebrand or enhance its image with new logos and images. Your responsibilities involve using design software such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or Adobe InDesign. You may need to deliver completed assets in predefined formats or resolutions, particularly if they are to be used in print. As a contractor, you must market your services to attract new clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract graphic designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Graphic Designer, strong visual design skills, proficiency in typography, color theory, and a relevant degree or portfolio are essential. Expertise in industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with project management tools are typically required. Excellent communication, creativity, and time management skills help set top designers apart, especially when collaborating remotely or on tight deadlines. These competencies ensure the delivery of high-quality, client-focused designs within specified timeframes, driving client satisfaction and repeat business.

How do contract graphic designers typically manage workflow and communication with multiple clients simultaneously?

Contract graphic designers often juggle several projects at once, requiring strong organizational and communication skills. Most use project management tools and clear documentation to keep track of deadlines, feedback, and revisions for each client. Regular check-ins, status updates, and timely responses are important to maintain client satisfaction and ensure all project requirements are met. Establishing clear expectations at the outset helps prevent misunderstandings and streamlines collaboration.

Job description

About us

We're a fitness equipment brand focused on creating high-quality visual content that drives awareness, inspires movement, and showcases our products across eCommerce, digital ads, and social media. We're looking for a Graphic Designer who can bring both technical excellence and creative vision to our growing in-house team.

Position overview

This role is centered on graphic design and the ability to work confidently with images — preparing, processing, and optimizing visual assets for use across digital and print channels. You'll be responsible for maintaining brand consistency and ensuring every asset is production-ready before it reaches the customer. As this is a contract role, candidates are expected to provide their own computer equipped to run Adobe Creative Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Create polished, conversion-focused graphics for eCommerce, digital ads, print, packaging, and campaigns.
  • Process and prepare product and lifestyle images for production use, including color correction, cropping, compositing, and background work.
  • Maintain organized, non-destructive file practices and retain all layers throughout the production workflow.
  • Optimize imagery for web, print, and multi-platform use — including formatting and compression.
  • Maintain a cohesive visual identity informed by strong typography and color theory across all assets.
  • Collaborate with the design team on layout concepts, asset preparation, and new design development.
  • Organize and archive finalized files within our digital asset management system.
  • Export assets at correct resolutions for both print and web deliverables.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of professional experience in graphic design and image production for both digital and print.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite — Photoshop and Illustrator required.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Photoshop and Camera Raw for image preparation and color work.
  • Experience managing image workflows including color correction, compositing, and multi-platform export.
  • Strong understanding of composition and visual storytelling.
  • Comfortable working in both Mac and PC environments.
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and shift focus as priorities change.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred skills

  • Familiarity with product imagery standards for eCommerce and fitness or lifestyle brands.
  • Experience optimizing content for web and social media platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams on branded campaigns.
  • Basic experience with motion graphics or video editing is a bonus, but not required.

How to apply

Please submit a link to your portfolio — applications without a portfolio will not be considered. Include examples that demonstrate your design range and image preparation work.
