Contract Frontend Developer information

What is a contract frontend developer?

Contract Frontend Developers are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to build and maintain the user-facing parts of websites and web applications. They specialize in technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and often work with frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js. Unlike full-time employees, contract frontend developers typically work for a set duration or until the completion of specific tasks. Their flexible arrangement allows companies to scale development efforts according to project needs.

What are some common challenges contract frontend developers face when joining new projects, and how can they adapt quickly?

Contract Frontend Developers often need to ramp up rapidly with unfamiliar codebases and team workflows. Adapting quickly involves proactive communication with team members, thorough review of project documentation, and leveraging onboarding resources provided. Familiarity with popular frameworks and version control systems helps, but flexibility and a willingness to ask clarifying questions are key. Building rapport with the team and participating in code reviews can also accelerate the adaptation process.

While both roles require similar credentials, the Contract Frontend Developer role is more focused on UI/UX and front-end frameworks, making it ideal for projects emphasizing user interface design and interactivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract frontend developer?

To thrive as a Contract Frontend Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a solid understanding of modern frontend frameworks like React, Vue, or Angular, often supported by a relevant degree or bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), build tools (Webpack, npm), and responsive design practices is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help you adapt quickly and collaborate effectively with remote teams or multiple clients. These skills ensure timely, high-quality project delivery and seamless integration into diverse development environments.

Employment Type: Full-time

We are hiring a Senior Frontend Engineer to become the technical anchor of our Marketplace web rewrite - rebuilding the highest-traffic journeys and defining frontend standards for the next 5+ years. This is a foundation year for the web experience. Approximately 75% of platform pages will be rebuilt. Two-thirds of our traffic comes from web, making performance, SEO, and Core Web Vitals business-critical. You will lead major initiatives such as full SRP (Search Results Page) and DLP (Detail Landing Page) rewrites, with a clear path toward becoming Tech Lead for our largest features and expanding influence across Marketplace Core, Growth, and Hotels teams.
The roadmap is ambitious:
International expansion (Mexico & Caribbean this year, Europe next)
In-housing search (moving from Algolia)
Full consumer experience rebuild
New Hotel SaaS product
Launching Spa as a major new vertical
AI integrations (concierge chatbot, AI spa booker)
Tech Stack
Next.js 16.x (App Router)
React 19
TypeScript
Tailwind
shadcn/ui
Playwright
Datadog
Ruby on Rails, Node.js (AWS), Postgres, MongoDB
We are open to strong Full Stack engineers willing to grow deeper into React/Next.js.
Key Responsibilities
Own major frontend initiatives end-to-end across highest-traffic surfaces (SRP, DLP)
Drive improvements in Core Web Vitals, SEO, conversion, and reliability
Lead technical design (RFCs, design docs) and align with Product & Design
Define scalable frontend architecture patterns (routing, data fetching, caching, components, analytics, error handling)
Raise the engineering quality bar via reviews, standards, and mentorship
Improve testing and observability (Playwright, Datadog, CI hygiene)
Partner with backend teams to design performant API contracts
Requirements
7+ years building production web applications
Deep React expertise
Strong experience with modern frontend architecture (SSR/SPA hybrids, especially Next.js patterns)
Proven experience leading high-traffic rewrites or migrations with measurable performance/SEO gains
Strong ownership mindset and ability to drive ambiguous projects to completion
High engineering standards (testing discipline, observability mindset, maintainability)
Bonus Skills
Next.js 16.x (App Router)
React 19
TypeScript
Tailwind, shadcn/ui
Playwright
Datadog
Backend exposure (Rails, Node.js, AWS)
Marketplace / two-sided platform experience (e.g., Airbnb-style platforms)
Ideal Background
We value engineering quality and judgment over narrow stack specialization.
Strong signals:
Experience in top-tier engineering organizations (Stripe, Airbnb, or similarly rigorous environments)
Strong CS fundamentals (ideally formal CS education)
High learning velocity and technical ownership mindset
Experience working on high-scale consumer web platforms
Benefits
Equity participation
Significant ownership opportunity in a growing company
Clear path toward Tech Lead scope
