Contract Fintech Software Engineer information

What is a contract fintech software engineer?

A Contract Fintech Software Engineer is a technology professional who is hired on a temporary or project basis to develop, maintain, or enhance software solutions in the financial technology (fintech) sector. These engineers work with banks, startups, or financial institutions to build secure, scalable, and compliant applications such as payment systems, trading platforms, or digital wallets. They often possess strong skills in programming languages relevant to fintech, as well as knowledge of financial regulations and security best practices. Contract roles offer flexibility for both the engineer and the hiring company, typically focusing on short-term or specialized projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract fintech software engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Fintech Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in Python, Java, or C#), a solid understanding of financial systems, and relevant software engineering experience. Familiarity with fintech platforms, cloud services (like AWS or Azure), APIs, and knowledge of security standards or certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) are often required. Outstanding problem-solving, adaptability, and clear communication skills help you excel in dynamic, fast-paced contract environments. These competencies ensure you can quickly deliver secure, scalable solutions that meet the unique regulatory and technical demands of the fintech industry.

What are some common challenges faced by contract fintech software engineers when joining new projects?

As a contract fintech software engineer, one of the primary challenges is quickly adapting to unfamiliar codebases and domain-specific regulations, such as PCI DSS or AML requirements. You’ll often need to ramp up rapidly on proprietary systems and integrate with existing teams, all while meeting tight deadlines. Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll frequently collaborate with both in-house developers and non-technical stakeholders to ensure compliance and deliver robust solutions. Staying updated on evolving financial regulations and fintech technologies is also crucial for success in these dynamic environments.

Job description

About Sunbound

Sunbound is Senior Living's Revenue Operating System.

We build AI-powered technology for assisted living and skilled nursing operators, giving them one connected platform to run their entire revenue operation. Admissions, private payments, Medicare and Medicaid claims, working capital. Everything between a resident moving in and the cash hitting the bank. Revenue on autopilot.

Senior living operators got into this business to care for people. But fragmented systems, manual follow-up, and endless admin work pull them in the wrong direction.

We fix that. Sunbound replaces manual revenue work with intelligent automation so operators get back to what matters: care.

The results:

  • $1B+ in payments processed annually
  • Operators across 45 states
  • 40,000+ family interactions supported every year
  • 99%+ net collection rates
  • 95%+ on-time payments
  • 40+ hours reclaimed per community per month
  • 96%+ first-pass claims acceptance

Trusted by Sinceri, Bickford, Maplewood, Spring Oak, Compass, and Omega. Backed by world-class investors.

About the Role

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our team at a critical moment in our growth. This is a senior technical leadership role with broad influence over architecture, engineering culture, and how we build, working closely with the CTO and cross-functional leadership to shape the direction of the product and the team.

Responsibilities
  • Set the technical direction for core systems, owning architectural decisions that span multiple teams and product areas
  • Drive alignment on engineering standards, patterns, and best practices across the organization
  • Lead complex, ambiguous projects from problem definition through delivery, often before the path is clear
  • Partner with product and business stakeholders to translate long-term goals into a coherent technical strategy
  • Identify leverage points in the stack and org where investment will compound: tooling, infrastructure, process, and culture
  • Mentor and raise the bar for engineers across the team through code review, design feedback, and direct collaboration
  • Represent engineering in cross-functional planning, bringing a systems-level perspective to product and operational decisions
Skills and Qualifications
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of technical leadership at scale
  • Demonstrated ability to own and drive org-wide technical initiatives, not just individual projects
  • Deep backend expertise with strong familiarity in Node.js, TypeScript, and modern cloud-native architectures (AWS preferred)
  • Experience in fintech or similarly regulated, complex-domain environments strongly preferred
  • Comfortable operating at multiple altitudes, able to write production code and influence system design in the same day
  • Strong written and verbal communication; able to make technical tradeoffs legible to non-technical stakeholders and drive consensus among engineers
  • BA/BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Preferred candidates based in New York or San Francisco
  • On-site 3 days a week in our office
Our Values

These aren't words on a wall. They're how we hire, give feedback, and make decisions every day.

  • Care: The person behind the problem always comes first.
  • Intellectual Honesty: Hard truths said early.
  • Own the Outcome: We are all drivers, not passengers.
  • Bias for Action: Bold moves, urgent execution.
  • Precision Matters: We get it right because it matters.
  • Play to Win: We find a way or make one.
Why Sunbound

If you're looking for a place where your work actually moves the needle, you found it.

We move fast, hold a high bar, and care deeply about doing things right. If that's how you're wired, you'll love it here. You'll be surrounded by people who are sharp, humble, and genuinely energized by the mission. A team that shows up for each other, celebrates wins loudly, and has real conversations early.

The impact is real too. Every feature shipped, every process improved, every customer supported has a direct effect on seniors and the families navigating one of the hardest transitions of their lives. That's not a marketing line. It's why people choose to stay.

And the benefits match the ambition:

  • Competitive comp with equity so you own a piece of what you're building
  • 90% of your medical premium covered
  • Fully paid parental leave
  • Unlimited PTO - and we actively encourage you to use it. Well-rested people do better work, make better decisions, and stay longer. Taking care of yourself isn't a perk here, it's part of the job
  • An AI-native environment where we trust you to do your best work

We're building something special here. Come be part of it.

Equal Opportunity Employment

We are an equal opportunity employer. We welcome amazing people from all backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives. If you need a reasonable accommodation during the application process, email us at apply@sunbound.ai ????
