Job description

Source Inspector, PCBA / IPC-A-610
IPC-610 Certified Inspector (Contract-to-hire or Direct based on Experience)
Overview
Joby Aviation is seeking a meticulous and technically skilled Quality Inspector to perform source inspections of Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs) and electronic assemblies used in its eVTOL aircraft.
The Inspector will support Joby’s Supplier Industrialization Inspection Program by verifying supplier workmanship against approved drawings and specifications, supporting AS9102 First Article Inspection activities, and inspecting production lots required for supplier inspection qualification.
Inspections will primarily take place at the supplier manufacturing facility in Newark, California. Periodic travel to Joby facilities and other domestic or international supplier locations may be required.
IPC-A-610 is foundational to this role. The Inspector will apply IPC-A-610 acceptance standards to evaluate solder joints, component placement, cleanliness, conformal coating, marking, and overall workmanship. The Inspector will also provide guidance on PCBA acceptance requirements and work closely with Supplier Industrialization Engineering to address inspection findings.
Responsibilities
PCB / PCBA Inspection – Primary Focus
  • Inspect PCBAs to IPC-A-610 Class 2 and Class 3 acceptance standards.
  • Evaluate solder joints, component placement, cleanliness, conformal coating, marking, and overall workmanship.
  • Set up and operate 3D Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) equipment and review inspection results.
  • Perform digital X-ray inspection of BGA, QFN, and other hidden solder joints for voiding, bridging, and other defects.
  • Apply J-STD-001 requirements when evaluating soldering workmanship and nonconforming products.
  • Provide guidance to supplier production personnel on IPC-A-610 workmanship and acceptance requirements.
Supplier Inspection and Qualification Support
  • Perform source inspections at supplier manufacturing facilities against approved drawings, specifications, and workmanship requirements.
  • Support First Article Inspection validation and prepare AS9102-compliant inspection documentation.
  • Inspect production lots required for supplier qualification, including two consecutive defect-free lots when applicable.
  • Support supplier qualification, requalification, and surveillance activities.
  • Reinstate or perform additional source inspections following an escape, RMA, or confirmed supplier nonconformance.
  • Communicate inspection findings and acceptance requirements to suppliers and Joby teams.
Dimensional and General Inspection
  • Use calipers, pin gauges, vision systems, and other inspection tools to verify product dimensions.
  • Inspect purchased electronic and electromechanical components against purchase orders, drawings, specifications, and engineering requirements.
  • Verify material certifications, product identification, and applicable inspection requirements.
Documentation and Nonconformance
  • Document inspection results in the quality management system and maintain clear, auditable records.
  • Initiate and track nonconformance reports through the Material Review Board process.
  • Communicate inspection results, nonconformances, and dispositions to affected teams.
  • Maintain traceability of products, materials, production lots, and calibrated inspection equipment.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Three or more years of experience in electronics, PCBA assembly, or quality inspection.
  • Working knowledge of IPC-A-610 acceptance standards and J-STD-001 requirements.
  • Experience operating 3D Automated Optical Inspection equipment and reviewing inspection results.
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic assembly drawings, schematics, Bills of Materials, specifications, and work instructions.
  • Ability to use basic inspection tools and evaluate product workmanship.
  • Understanding of product, material, lot, and calibration traceability.
  • Ability to clearly document inspection results and communicate nonconformances.
  • Ability to work effectively with suppliers, engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within the United States.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active IPC-A-610 Certified IPC Specialist or Certified IPC Trainer certification.
  • Experience performing source inspection at supplier manufacturing facilities.
  • Experience using digital X-ray equipment to inspect BGA, QFN, and other hidden solder joints.
  • Knowledge of AS9102 First Article Inspection requirements and FAI documentation.
  • Experience with supplier qualification, production-lot inspection, or reduced-inspection programs.
  • Experience with Keyence vision systems, CMMs, optical CMMs, Faro Arms, or Romer Arms.
  • Experience with PolyWorks or CMM programming.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Inspector or equivalent certification.
  • Basic knowledge of Statistical Process Control, including control charts and identifying out-of-control conditions.
  • Experience working in aerospace or another regulated manufacturing environment.

Employment Type
This position may be filled as either:
  • A full-time, direct hourly position with Joby Aviation; or
  • An initial six-month temporary contract through a staffing agency.
Contract extensions or conversion to direct employment may be considered based on performance, business needs, budget, and position approval.

Travel & Expense Reimbursement
Approved business travel expenses, including transportation, mileage, lodging, and meals, will be reimbursed in accordance with the applicable Joby Aviation or staffing agency travel policy.
Normal commuting expenses to the employee’s primary assigned work location are not reimbursable.
