Contract Electronics Engineer information

What is a contract electronics engineer?

Contract Electronics Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test electronic systems and components on a temporary or project-by-project basis, rather than as permanent employees. They are typically hired by companies to provide specialized expertise for specific projects, such as designing circuit boards, developing embedded systems, or troubleshooting hardware issues. Contract Electronics Engineers often work for engineering consultancies, staffing agencies, or as independent freelancers, and their contracts may range from a few weeks to several months or longer, depending on project needs.

This role focuses on the precision assembly, repair, and maintenance of small electronic products, including circuit boards, sensors, mechanical parts, and wiring, in a calibration laboratory environment. The Electronic Assembly Technician works closely with a small team to perform detailed soldering and inspection tasks under a microscope while maintaining strict quality standards and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble customer products, including circuit boards, sensors, mechanical parts, and wiring, following established procedures and quality standards.
  • Perform detailed repair and maintenance of customer products under a microscope, working with components approximately the size of a quarter.
  • Hand solder surface-mount technology (SMT) components, including very small package sizes down to 0402 metric and 0102 size, using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Use microscopes and magnifiers to perform precise assembly, soldering, inspection, and rework of electronic components.
  • Test assembled and repaired products to verify proper functionality and adherence to specifications.
  • Maintain accurate quality records and follow documented procedures in accordance with IPC-J-STD-001 and related standards.
  • Collaborate with a small team of technicians in the calibration lab to coordinate work, share best practices, and support overall workflow.
  • Follow all laboratory and production guidelines to ensure consistent product quality and reliability.

Essential Skills

  • Valid IPC-J-STD-001 certification or a certification that has expired within the last 2–3 years.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Electronic Assembly Technician.
  • Recent experience with SMT component hand soldering down to size 0402 metric.
  • Experience soldering surface-mounted components down to 0102 size.
  • Proficiency in soldering techniques for SMT components and fine-pitch work.
  • Experience working with microscopes or magnifiers for electronic assembly and inspection.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and maintain quality documentation in line with IPC-J-STD-001 standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a calibration lab or similar precision-focused environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity for handling very small components.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small, collaborative technician team.
  • Comfort using hand tools and electronic assembly equipment in a production setting.

Work Environment

The role is 100% onsite in a calibration laboratory environment, working closely with a small group of technicians. The standard schedule consists of an 8-hour workday, with flexibility to discuss start and end times with leadership.
