The duration and terms of their work vary based on the contract and project scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract developer?

Job description

Contract Geospatial Developer – GeoServer / Esri JavaScript Integration

CompassData is seeking a contract Geospatial Developer to replace the current ArcGIS Server dependency supporting the CompassData Ground Control Point Archive web map with a GeoServer-based service workflow.

The current public GCP Archive map is available here:

https://compassdatainc.com/ground-control-points-archive/

The map is built using the Esri JavaScript API and currently consumes an Esri feature service published from ArcGIS Server in the CompassData data center. The goal is to replace that ArcGIS Server dependency with GeoServer while preserving the existing public map experience.

The GCP Archive contains approximately 90,000 ground control points stored in a Microsoft SQL Server database hosted in CompassData’s local VMware cluster in the Denver data center. Related metadata, GCP information, survey documentation, and pictures are stored in AWS S3. The archive data does not need to be migrated.

Project Scope

The selected developer will review the current Esri JavaScript web map, ArcGIS Server feature service, and supporting ArcGIS Pro configuration, then configure GeoServer in the CompassData data center to access the local Microsoft SQL Server GCP Archive database and serve GCP point locations to the web map.

The updated workflow should allow the existing or updated Esri JavaScript web map to consume GeoServer-served GCP location data, preferably through WFS or another approved GeoServer-supported service approach. The map must continue to display GCP locations, support metadata popups, maintain symbology and scale behavior where practical, and provide links or references to related metadata, GCP information, survey documentation, and pictures stored in AWS S3.

Key Deliverables

The expected deliverables include:

  • GeoServer configured in the CompassData data center.
  • GeoServer connected to the local Microsoft SQL Server GCP Archive database hosted in CompassData’s VMware cluster.
  • Updated Esri JavaScript API workflow consuming GeoServer-served GCP location data.
  • Public-facing GCP Archive map displaying existing GCP locations and metadata popups.
  • Updated CompassData website integration or iframe target, if needed.
  • Validation of display behavior, coordinate accuracy, browser compatibility, public access, and performance with approximately 90,000 GCP locations.
  • Final technical documentation, including service endpoints, configuration notes, data paths, AWS S3 metadata/documentation references, maintenance steps, cutover plan, and rollback recommendations.

Desired Experience

The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience with:

  • GeoServer configuration and WFS/WMS/GeoJSON service publishing.
  • Esri JavaScript API, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, Esri feature services, and Esri web maps.
  • Replacing Esri server services with open-source geospatial services.
  • Connecting GeoServer to Microsoft SQL Server in a local data-center environment.
  • AWS S3 resources for metadata, imagery, survey information, or document access.
  • Esri JavaScript API integration with non-Esri services such as GeoServer WFS, WMS, or GeoJSON.
  • Popup configuration, attribute display, metadata linking, coordinate systems, projections, and web map performance tuning.
  • Windows Server, VMware, or data-center-hosted geospatial environments.
  • Clear technical documentation for future maintenance.

How to Respond

Please provide a brief summary of relevant experience, especially work involving GeoServer, WFS services, ArcGIS Server replacement, Esri JavaScript API, Microsoft SQL Server, VMware or local data-center environments, AWS S3 metadata or imagery resources, and website map integration.

Please also include availability, hourly rate, estimated level of effort, proposed approach, and examples of similar implementation work if available.

Location

Remote, local to Denver metro preferred for occasional travel to Englewood office.
