Data Center Technician II (1099 Contract – Immediate Need)

Reports To: Data Center Field Manager
Status: 1099 Contract (Independent Contractor)
Position Type: Contract / Project-Based
Travel Requirement: Up to 80%
Start Date: Immediate Need
Position Summary

The IT Infrastructure Technician II is an experienced technician responsible for executing and supporting all stages of the infrastructure lifecycle within data center and client environments. This role performs advanced installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting while operating with increased independence. The Technician II also supports project coordination, mentors junior technicians, and ensures adherence to quality, safety, and customer standards.
This is a 1099 independent contractor position intended for experienced professionals who can operate with a high degree of autonomy. Contractors are responsible for managing their own taxes, insurance, and business-related obligations. This role offers project-based work with immediate deployment opportunities.
Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure Installation & Deployment

  • Installation of data cabinets, racks, and overhead/underfloor cable tray systems
  • Execute and validate copper, fiber, and console cabling to industry standards
  • Rack, stack, and cable complex equipment deployments including PDUs, servers, and network gear
  • Configure, test, and troubleshoot serial console (conserver) access
  • Interpret basic design documents, rack elevations, and cable matrices
Operations & Maintenance

  • Perform advanced hardware upgrades (CPU, memory, components) and system optimization
  • Troubleshoot server, network, and connectivity issues with minimal supervision
  • Execute and validate hardware migrations and re-cabling efforts
  • Review turn-up schedules and proactively identify risks or conflicts
Decommissioning & End-of-Life

  • Perform “rip and replace” activities for hardware and infrastructure components
  • Oversee inventory tracking and proper disposition of retired assets
  • Ensure compliant data destruction and e-cycling processes
  • Support decommissioning of supporting infrastructure (power, cabling, etc.)
Support & Coordination

  • Provide Tier 1–2 support for servers and network devices
  • Serve as an escalation point for Technician I staff
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, and cross-functional teams
  • Assist with onsite project execution and communicate status updates to stakeholders
Systems, Inventory & Documentation

  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of ticketing systems and documentation
  • Process and track hardware RMAs with minimal oversight
  • Maintain inventory controls and contribute to audit readiness
  • Identify and recommend process improvements
Leadership & Development

  • Mentor and train Technician I team members
  • Promote adherence to standards, safety, and best practices
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
General Responsibilities

  • Follow and reinforce company policies, site requirements, and safety procedures
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized data center environment
  • Adhere to OSHA safety standards and industry best practices
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of IT infrastructure, data center, telecom, or related technical field experience
  • Proven experience in installation, cabling, and hardware troubleshooting
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Effective time management and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation and diagrams
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the role
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Valid passport or ability to travel domestically and internationally as required
Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree (AAS) or equivalent military/technical experience
  • Experience with advanced test equipment (optical testers, cable certifiers, voltmeters)
  • Strong understanding of data center infrastructure (power, cooling, racks, cabling)
  • Working knowledge of network topology and connectivity concepts
  • Experience with telecom, server, or networking hardware environments
  • Familiarity with industry standards (TIA-942, BICSI, Telcordia GR-1275)
  • OSHA and/or NFPA 70E certification or training
Independent Contractor Requirements (1099)

  • Must be legally authorized to perform work as an independent contractor
  • Responsible for all applicable taxes, insurance, licensing, and business expenses
  • Must provide own basic tools and equipment unless otherwise specified per project
  • Ability to invoice according to agreed billing schedule and contract terms
  • Must maintain professional liability coverage if required by project or client
Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50–80 lbs regularly
  • Ability to work on ladders and in confined spaces
  • Ability to work around electrical systems and ESD-sensitive equipment
  • Ability to perform physical activities including bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, pushing, and pulling
  • Ability to work on-site at construction and installation environments
