Job description
Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, Water Skills Instructors will provide instruction and leadership for swim
lessons and snorkeling in accordance with YMCA National Aquatic Program guidelines and/ or the grant scope.
Essential Functions/ Job Duties:
• Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the beginning of work shift.
• Ensure the safety of participants in the pool area by developing and supervising all YMCA recreational swimming
and/or swim lessons in a responsible manner.
• Ensure the safety of participants in the open water by developing and supervising all YMCA recreational snorkeling
lessons responsibly.
• Ensure that necessary equipment is available during work time and put away when not on duty.
• Develop and maintain good relations with program participants and pool/ open water site management staff.
• Treat minor accidents as necessary and take appropriate actions for all incidents/accidents, as outlined in the
YMCA Risk Management procedures.
• Bring to the Aquatic Director's attention any condition or practice which may cause an unsafe circumstance to the
health and safety of participants or staff.
• Use preventive lifeguarding techniques to minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.
• Uphold all YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to safety and risk management, and attend all
mandatory YMCA trainings.
• Other tasks assigned by the Aquatic Director or the Program Director.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities/ Position Requirements:
Education and Experience:
• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Two or more years of experience participating in, or working with aquatics and swim lessons, preferred.
Certificates and Licenses:
• YMCA Swim Instructor Certified or WSI
• First Aid/CPR/AED, CPRO, and oxygen administration certified.
Other skills and abilities:
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to interact with individuals at all levels.
• Must be organized and detail-oriented.
• Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults including program participants, staff, and representatives of contract pool sites.
• Ability to respond to safety and emergencies.
• Must wear YMCA-provided lifeguard shirt & suit.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
• Avid swimmer, passionate about the sport of swimming, dedicated to the cause of water safety and drowning
prevention.
• Innate desire to provide excellent customer service to participants, which will result in an exceptional aquatic
experience.
• High-energy personality, outgoing, and enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.

Work Environment:
Work environment characteristics described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully

• Primarily works in an outdoor pool environment.
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift/move set up and store equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Also, needs to be able to demonstrate the
specific skills to show technical proficiency in lifeguarding rescue techniques.
• Must be able to swim 500 yards/meters non-stop and tread water for two minutes without using hands.
• Must be able to hear without aid and see victims.
