What is a contract coding?

A Contract Coding job involves assigning standardized medical codes to diagnoses, procedures, and services for healthcare facilities on a contractual basis. These coders work independently or for an agency, often remotely, to ensure accurate medical billing and insurance reimbursement. They must have expertise in coding systems like ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, and typically need certification such as CPC or CCS. Contract coders may work with multiple clients and are responsible for maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations.

What does a contract coder do?

A typical day for a Contract Coder involves reviewing patient medical records, assigning accurate codes based on documented diagnoses and treatments, and entering this information into billing or EHR systems. Most contract coders work remotely, allowing for schedule flexibility, but are expected to meet productivity and accuracy standards set by their employer or client. Communication is often virtual, and while tasks are mostly independent, regular collaboration with healthcare providers or coding auditors may be required to clarify documentation and ensure compliance. Efficient time management and self-organization are key, as contract roles often require balancing multiple assignments or clients simultaneously.

What skills and qualifications are needed for contract coding?

To succeed in Contract Coding, you need a strong background in medical coding practices, knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes, and often certification such as CPC, CCS, or RHIT. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems, coding software, and medical billing platforms is typically expected. Strong attention to detail, self-motivation, and effective time management are vital soft skills in this independent, deadline-driven role. Mastering these abilities ensures accurate coding, regulatory compliance, and consistent delivery of reliable work for healthcare clients.

Job description

Director of Revenue Cycle Management

Groth Pain and Spine is one of Long Island's largest and most respected multi-specialty pain management practices, bringing together board-certified interventional pain specialists, Chiropractors, and Physical and Massage therapists under one roof. We serve thousands of patients each year across state-of-the-art facilities, and we're growing. We're looking for exceptional talent to grow with us.

The Role:

Key Responsibilities:

· Oversee all RCM functions: coding, billing, claims, payment posting, denial management, and collections.

· Track and improve KPIs: clean claim rate, days in AR, denial rate, and net collection rate.

· Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing RCM team with a culture of accountability and excellence.

· Partner with providers and administrators to align RCM workflows with clinical and organizational goals.

· Ensure compliance with federal/state regulations, payer contracts, ICD-10/CPT coding standards, and HIPAA.

· Manage payer contracts and credentialing; identify opportunities for renegotiation and revenue enhancement.

· Drive practice management system optimization and RCM technology/automation improvements.

· Deliver clear financial and operational reports with actionable insights to senior leadership.

Required Qualifications:

· Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or related field; Master's degree (MHA/MBA) preferred.

· Proven leadership of RCM teams in a multi-specialty or high-volume clinical environment.

· Strong expertise in ICD-10, CPT, E&M coding, billing workflows, and payer reimbursement.

· Experience with practice management/EHR systems (Athena, eClinicalWorks, Modernizing Medicine, or similar).

· Demonstrated success improving AR metrics, reducing denials, and recovering revenue.

· Coding or RCM certification a plus: CPC, CPMA, CHFP, or equivalent.

· Knowledge of pain management or interventional/spine billing highly desirable.

· Solid understanding of HIPAA, CMS regulations, and healthcare compliance.

What We Offer:

· $115,000 – $160,000 salary commensurate with experience

· Comprehensive benefits: medical, dental, vision, PTO, and holidays

· Professional development and growth opportunities

· Collaborative culture with strong provider and administrative leadership
