Job description

Company Overview

Upchurch is a rapidly growing, full-service building engineering company providing mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical services across the southeastern United States. Founded in 1970 and headquartered in Horn Lake, MS, Upchurch has grown through both organic expansion and strategic acquisitions, establishing a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and service excellence. We offer end-to-end solutions—from design and installation to ongoing maintenance and emergency support—helping clients maximize building performance, energy efficiency, and equipment lifespan.

Position Summary

The Facility Performance Engineer is responsible for the operational, financial, and customer performance of assigned long-term facility service agreements. This position serves as the primary point of accountability for maintaining reliable and efficient customer facilities while ensuring each agreement achieves its financial and profitability objectives.

The role combines technical project management, facility operations, contract administration, customer relationship management, financial oversight, and data analytics. The Facility Performance Engineer coordinates HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, building automation, maintenance, repair, and capital replacement activities across multiple customer locations. This position regularly coordinates technicians, contractors, vendors, engineers, and internal operational teams.

Key ResponsibilitiesContract and Financial Management
  • Manage the day-to-day performance of assigned facility service agreements.
  • Develop and maintain project budgets, cost forecasts, cash-flow projections, and profitability reports.
  • Monitor labor, material, subcontractor, repair, and replacement expenses.
  • Identify emerging financial risks and implement corrective actions.
  • Evaluate repair-versus-replacement decisions based on lifecycle cost, reliability, efficiency, and contract impact.
  • Manage invoicing, purchase orders, proposals, cost allocation, and supporting financial documentation.
  • Ensure assigned agreements meet established profitability expectations.
Facility Operations
  • Coordinate responses to HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, and other facility issues.
  • Review customer requests, analytics alerts, alarms, service records, and equipment history to determine the appropriate response.
  • Develop scopes of work and coordinate internal technicians, contractors, vendors, engineers, and controls personnel.
  • Track issues from initial identification through investigation, corrective action, and verification.
  • Confirm completed work resolves the underlying problem.
  • Identify recurring failures and develop long-term corrective action plans.
  • Support emergency and after-hours response coordination when necessary.
Analytics and Performance
  • Review facility analytics, equipment trends, utility information, alarms, work orders, and service history.
  • Identify equipment failures, operational inefficiencies, control problems, maintenance needs, and financial risks.
  • Prioritize issues based on customer impact, operational risk, energy use, cost exposure, and likelihood of failure.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment scheduling, setpoints, sequencing, controls, and energy performance.
  • Work with internal teams to improve analytical rules, alerts, reports, and operational tools.
Customer Management
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for assigned customers.
  • Respond promptly to customer questions, concerns, and facility issues.
  • Conduct regular customer meetings and site visits.
  • Prepare and present customer-facing reports covering facility performance, completed work, open issues, planned activities, and recommendations.
  • Communicate technical and financial information clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Manage customer expectations while maintaining clear contract boundaries.
  • Identify additional opportunities to improve customer operations and create value.
Capital Planning and Project Delivery
  • Develop and maintain short- and long-term equipment replacement plans.
  • Coordinate HVAC and infrastructure replacement projects from planning through completion.
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, procurement plans, and implementation strategies.
  • Monitor project cost, schedule, quality, and operational impact.
  • Evaluate equipment options based on lifecycle cost, maintainability, efficiency, reliability, and contract impact.
  • Ensure completed projects are properly commissioned, documented, and incorporated into ongoing maintenance and analytics programs.
Reporting and Continuous Improvement
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment issues, customer requests, work performed, costs, approvals, and resolutions.
  • Track key indicators related to reliability, response time, recurring failures, energy performance, customer satisfaction, and profitability.
  • Provide regular project and financial updates to company leadership.
  • Develop standardized workflows, templates, and reporting processes.
  • Help improve the company's facility management, analytics, financial tracking, and project-delivery tools.
  • Use data analysis, automation, or programming where appropriate to improve efficiency and decision-making.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, facilities management, building science, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience in HVAC, facility operations, mechanical construction, building automation, energy services, or technical project management.
  • Working knowledge of commercial HVAC systems and general building infrastructure.
  • Experience coordinating technicians, contractors, vendors, and internal operational teams.
  • Experience managing budgets, forecasts, invoices, proposals, and project financial performance.
  • Strong project-management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze technical and financial information and make practical decisions.
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation, and customer-service skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and related business applications.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly to customer sites.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off and holiday pay.
  • Opportunities for professional development and certification assistance.
