Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a Chemical Engineer to join our team supporting the DOE's Y-12 National Security Complex! This position is full-time and will be based out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Responsibilities
  • Support the Mechanical Project Design group at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
  • Provide process design support to the Lithium Processing Facility Project at the Plant.
  • Support includes participation in designs ranging from scope definition, feasibility and conceptual studies, and preliminary/detailed designs.
  • Perform tasks including flowsheet development (block diagrams, process flow diagrams, and P&IDs), analyses and calculations, reports/studies and Process Descriptions preparation.

Requirements
  • Education & Years of Experience - Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering and 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Citizenship - To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
  • Clearance - To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.
  • Experience providing chemical/process engineering support for complex industrial, nuclear, manufacturing, or DOE-related projects.
  • Strong experience with process design through multiple project phases, including scope definition, feasibility studies, conceptual design, preliminary design, and detailed design.
  • Proficiency in developing and reviewing:
    • Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs)
    • Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
    • Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
    • Process flowsheets
  • Experience performing chemical/process engineering analyses and calculations.
  • Ability to prepare engineering reports, technical studies, calculations, and Process Descriptions.
  • Knowledge of process equipment, piping systems, instrumentation, valves, and process controls.
  • Ability to interpret and review engineering drawings, specifications, design criteria, and technical documentation.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary engineering/design team, including coordination with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and engineering judgment skills.
  • Ability to support projects in a highly regulated environment, preferably DOE, nuclear, chemical processing, or similar facilities.

Desired Skills
  • Active DOE "Q" Clearance or Active DoD "Top Secret" Clearance, preferred.
  • Experience with lithium processing, chemical processing facilities, or nuclear material processing is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with DOE facilities and Y-12 engineering/design requirements is preferred.

The NNSA's Y-12 National Security Complex, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is the nation's only source of enriched uranium nuclear weapon components and provides enriched uranium for the U.S. Navy as well as excels in materials science, precision manufacturing, and stores enriched uranium. Y-12 supports efforts to reduce nuclear proliferation risk and performs work for other government agencies (energy.gov).
