Job Summary
As a Biologist II, you will be joining a dynamic team providing invaluable support to a large government contract performing applied laboratory research across a diverse range of chemical and biological disciplines. Operating in a collaborative environment, you will serve as a senior laboratory professional responsible for maintaining the laboratory in a continuous state of operational readiness and supporting the day-to-day execution of analytical activities. You will train and mentor laboratory staff, ensure procedures are followed correctly, support troubleshooting and technical problem-solving, prepare draft technical reports and supporting documentation, sustain workflow continuity, equipment readiness, and adhere to quality and safety requirements in a mission-driven laboratory environment. Provide invaluable support to a large government contract, The results of your efforts will be used in technical evaluations and/or assessments of a wide range of biological and chemical samples.

This full-time position is contingent upon contract award and will be in Washington DC.
Responsibilities
  • Apply experience in chemistry and biological science to adapt/design and execute laboratory-based experiments for sample analysis and characterization independently and with small teams of laboratory staff .
  • Select and adapt technical approaches/solutions for complex assignments with minimal oversight.
  • Develop new/novel assays independently or with minimal guidance.
  • Troubleshoot issues with test methods and equipment.
  • Identify gaps in the current state-of-the-art and suggest improvements.
  • Work independently to meet study objectives and deliverables with guidance from senior scientists
  • Independently troubleshoot programs and experiments using experience and scientific literature
  • Mentor and train lab personnel.
  • Analyze and interpret data and assist in the preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations
  • Participate in identifying business opportunities and development of proposals, white papers, and marketing plans.
  • Follow established safety guidelines to safely work with hazardous/infectious (RG2) materials.
  • Some domestic travel is possible but not anticipated.

Key Qualifications
  • Minimum BS degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Physical Science and >3 years of relevant laboratory work experience.
  • Expertise designing and executing experiments rooted in chemistry and biological disciplines.
  • Proficiency with applicable open-source software tools and laboratory equipment
  • Proven ability to conduct experiments according to standard operating procedures.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work in a team environment and train less experienced staff.
  • Sufficiently medically fit to work in the laboratory to perform assigned duties including the ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE), lift up to 25 pounds, and work in the proximity of hazardous/infectious materials.
  • Sole U.S. citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances as a condition of employment.a

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working within laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO17025, GLP).
  • Active or previously held security clearance

Salary Range
Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $78,000 - $113,000 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
