Contract Backend Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract backend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, along with experience in database management and API development, supported by a relevant degree or proven project experience. Familiarity with frameworks (such as Django, Spring, or Express), cloud services (like AWS or Azure), and version control systems (e.g., Git) is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new codebases and team environments set top contractors apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable, scalable backend solutions and integrating smoothly into diverse project teams.

What are some common challenges faced by contract backend developers when joining a new project?

Contract Backend Developers often encounter challenges such as quickly understanding existing codebases, adapting to different tech stacks, and aligning with the team's development practices. Since contract roles usually have tight deadlines, developers must rapidly familiarize themselves with project documentation and workflows. Effective communication with team members and proactive clarification of requirements are essential to ensure smooth integration and successful project outcomes.

What is a contract backend developer?

Contract backend developers are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to build and maintain the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web or mobile applications. They work behind the scenes to ensure that applications function smoothly, handle data efficiently, and communicate effectively with front-end systems. Unlike full-time employees, contract backend developers typically work for a set duration or on specific projects, offering flexibility to both clients and developers. They often bring specialized expertise in programming languages such as Python, Java, Node.js, or Ruby, and may work remotely or on-site depending on the contract terms.

Job description

About Dusk
Dusk delivers the capabilities of a world-class entertainment director, at a fraction of the cost. Made for modern venue operators to save time, improve operations, and boost revenue. Trusted by 500+ bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and hotels - powering 50K+ concerts annually. We've raised over $5M from strategic investors, including founders and executives from Carta, Vercel, and Yelp as well as Atlantic Records, Red Light Management, and Independent Artists Group (IAG). Our team includes YC-backed founders and individuals from Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, and Apollo.io.
About the Role
We're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to help build the core infrastructure that powers Dusk's event management platform. You'll work closely with product, design, and data teams to architect reliable, scalable services that deliver real-time insights, automation, and integrations for venues worldwide. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on technical ownership, performance optimization, and solving complex data problems in production environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and build scalable APIs, microservices, and data pipelines that power the Dusk platform
  • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of backend features - from design to deployment and monitoring
  • Collaborate with frontend teams on data contracts and system integrations
  • Implement best practices around performance, reliability, and observability
  • Optimize database design, query performance, and system latency
  • Integrate with third-party systems including CRMs, ticketing, and POS solutions
  • Participate in code reviews, mentor junior developers, and help evolve engineering culture
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, ideally in SaaS or high-scale production systems
  • Strong proficiency in Python, Node.js, Rust or Go (we use Python, Rust, Node)
  • Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred) and data modeling
  • Familiarity with AWS, Docker, automated testing and modern CI/CD pipelines
  • Deep understanding of RESTful APIs, caching, and distributed systems design
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Bonus: experience with machine learning pipelines or event-driven architectures
Perks & Benefits
  • Competitive salary + equity options
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits
  • Early technical ownership in a high-growth, mission-driven company
  • Access to live events and industry networking opportunities

If you love building reliable systems that power unforgettable live experiences, and want to shape the future of entertainment infrastructure, we'd love to hear from you.
