Contract Backend Developer information

What is a contract backend developer?

Contract backend developers are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to build and maintain the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web or mobile applications. They work behind the scenes to ensure that applications function smoothly, handle data efficiently, and communicate effectively with front-end systems. Unlike full-time employees, contract backend developers typically work for a set duration or on specific projects, offering flexibility to both clients and developers. They often bring specialized expertise in programming languages such as Python, Java, Node.js, or Ruby, and may work remotely or on-site depending on the contract terms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract backend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, along with experience in database management and API development, supported by a relevant degree or proven project experience. Familiarity with frameworks (such as Django, Spring, or Express), cloud services (like AWS or Azure), and version control systems (e.g., Git) is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new codebases and team environments set top contractors apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable, scalable backend solutions and integrating smoothly into diverse project teams.

What are some common challenges faced by contract backend developers when joining a new project?

Contract Backend Developers often encounter challenges such as quickly understanding existing codebases, adapting to different tech stacks, and aligning with the team's development practices. Since contract roles usually have tight deadlines, developers must rapidly familiarize themselves with project documentation and workflows. Effective communication with team members and proactive clarification of requirements are essential to ensure smooth integration and successful project outcomes.

Job description

The Opportunity

As a full stack developer, you can resolve a problem with a complete end-to-end solution in a fast, agile environment. If you're looking for the chance to not just develop software, but to create a system that will make a difference, we need you on our team. We're looking for a seasoned developer like you with the expertise needed to build software and systems from vision to production-ready.

This role is more than just coding. As a lead full stack developer at Booz Allen, you'll oversee a team as they learn new tools and techniques and identify needed system improvements. You'll help clients overcome their most difficult challenges using the latest architectural approaches, tools, and technologies. You'll make sure the solution developed by the team considers the current architecture and operating environment, as well as future functionality and enhancements.

Work with us as we shape systems for the better. Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have
  • 8+ years of experience in software development including backend and services, including in a lead or senior role on delivered systems
  • Experience in a server-side language, such as Java, .NET, C#, Python, or Go, including building microservices and well-designed RESTful APIs
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL data stores, including schema and data modeling
  • Experience with message or streaming platforms, such as Kafka, and containerization
  • Experience with frontend, such as React, to contribute across the full stack
  • Experience with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and containerized deployment
  • Ability to translate mission and reliability requirements into scalable, resilient service designs
  • Ability to obtain a Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a technology field, or 6+ years of experience in mission systems in lieu of a degree
Nice If You Have
  • Experience with event-driven architecture and distributed system patterns, such as CQRS, event sourcing, and sagas
  • Experience with cloud-native development on AWS or Kubernetes
  • Experience implementing a secure SDLC, including scanning, secrets management, and secure coding practices
  • Experience with C2, ISR, or other mission-critical DoD systems and their operational constraints
  • Experience with API gateways, service mesh, and inter-service security such as mTLS or OAuth2/OIDC
  • Experience with observability for distributed services, such as Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry
  • Secret clearance
  • DoD 8570 IAT Level II Security+ CE or equivalent certification
Clearance

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
