Contract Arduino Programming information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Arduino Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Arduino Programmer, you need a solid understanding of embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and electronics fundamentals, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with the Arduino IDE, microcontroller platforms, circuit design tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective client communication distinguish top performers in this field. These skills are crucial for delivering robust, reliable solutions that meet client specifications within tight deadlines.

What are some typical challenges contract Arduino programmers face when working with clients on short-term projects?

Contract Arduino programmers often encounter challenges such as unclear project specifications, tight deadlines, and limited access to client hardware for testing. Communication is key, as clients may not always have a technical background, making it important to clarify requirements and expectations early. Additionally, contract programmers must be adaptable, frequently troubleshooting hardware and software issues independently while ensuring that their code is well-documented for client handover.

What is contract Arduino programming?

Contract Arduino programming refers to hiring a programmer or developer on a contractual basis to create, modify, or troubleshoot software for Arduino microcontroller projects. These professionals typically work on a temporary or project-by-project basis, helping clients with tasks such as prototyping, sensor integration, automation, and custom hardware solutions. The work can range from writing simple sketches to developing complex embedded systems, depending on the client's needs. Contract Arduino programmers may also assist with hardware selection, debugging, and documentation to ensure the success of an electronics project.

What is the difference between Contract Arduino Programming vs Contract Embedded Systems Developer?

AspectContract Arduino ProgrammingContract Embedded Systems Developer
CredentialsBasic electronics knowledge, Arduino certificationsAdvanced electronics, microcontroller certifications, embedded systems training
Work EnvironmentPrototyping labs, maker spaces, small-scale projectsIndustrial settings, manufacturing, complex hardware integration
Industry UsageHobbyist projects, educational tools, small startupsAutomotive, aerospace, medical devices, large tech companies

Contract Arduino Programming typically involves developing code for Arduino microcontrollers in prototyping or educational contexts, requiring basic electronics skills. In contrast, Contract Embedded Systems Developers work on complex embedded hardware across industries, often requiring advanced certifications and experience. Both roles involve embedded programming but differ significantly in scope, complexity, and industry application.

Job description

Job Type Full-time Description Electrical Technician - SensXR Development and Integration Primary Work Location: On-site role with limited hybrid flexibility (minimum 3 days per week in office required). Must be a U.S Citizen: Yes Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain active Secret clearance (PCL) and the ability to obtain a clearance up to Top Secret (PCL) if later needed. Job Summary Obsidian Solutions Group is seeking a hands-on, resourceful Electrical Technician to support the development, integration, and testing of the SensXR system-a modular, multi-threat detection platform. This role blends traditional electronics assembly with PCB design support, part selection, and prototyping. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently to move from schematic capture and PCB layout (KiCad/SPICE) through ordering, assembling, testing, and troubleshooting custom PCBs and subsystems. While this position is structured as a technician role, success requires an individual who can take initiative, operate with minimal supervision, and bring creative, R&D-focused problem solving. This technician will directly influence prototype readiness and reliability, ensuring SensXR meets demanding performance standards for DoD CBRNE applications. Responsibilities Parts Research & Procurement
* Identify, research, and evaluate electronic components using vendor catalogs (e.g., Digi-Key, Mouser). * Read datasheets to confirm specifications, pinouts, and integration requirements. * Maintain part libraries and BOMs, proposing alternatives when supply constraints occur. Schematic & PCB Development
* Assist with schematic capture and PCB layout using KiCad and SPICE-based tools, developing workable designs with minimal supervision. * Prepare fabrication and assembly files for outside PCB manufacturing services, ensuring compliance with engineering standards. * Coordinate orders for bare boards and/or assembled PCBs through contract manufacturers, monitoring quality and delivery timelines. Assembly & Testing
* Assemble, solder, and rework prototype PCBs and subsystems. * Perform unit tests, quality control, and performance benchmarking of custom electronics. * Troubleshoot independently using multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers, escalating only when needed. System Integration
* Wire and integrate PCBs, sensors, and RF modules into SensXR subsystems. * Address ruggedization, EMI/EMC considerations, and field reliability requirements. * Support firmware bring-up and perform basic coding/debugging in Arduino IDE, working independently where required. Prototyping & Field Validation
* Build and adapt prototypes, cable assemblies, and enclosures. * Support lab and field tests of SensXR hardware, capturing logs and diagnostic data. * Provide structured feedback for iterative design improvements and system reliability. Documentation & QA
* Maintain accurate build/test documentation aligned with ISO 9001 processes. * Contribute to design reviews, documenting revisions and part traceability. * Ensure all assemblies meet workmanship standards (IPC/WHMA-A-620 preferred). Requirements * Associate degree in Electronics Technology, Mechatronics, or equivalent military/technical training. * 3+ years of hands-on electronics assembly, integration, and testing experience. * Experience with PCB design tools (KiCad preferred) and basic circuit simulation (SPICE). * Skilled in soldering, wiring, and crimping to industry standards. * Familiarity with Arduino IDE or similar environments for prototyping. * Ability to read/interpret electrical schematics and component datasheets. * Proficiency with test instruments (multimeter, oscilloscope, logic analyzer). * Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and deliver results with limited supervision. Desired * Experience taking PCB designs from schematic through fabrication and validation. * Background with sensor integration (gas, RF, GPS, IMU, etc.). * Exposure to ruggedized/military electronics or wearable/AR-integrated systems. * IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC-A-610, or equivalent soldering/assembly certification. * Creative, R&D-oriented problem solver with curiosity to explore new approaches. Physical Requirements and Work Environment * Hybrid role with on-site prototyping and test event support. * Must be comfortable working in lab environments and with hands-on instrumentation. Travel Requirements * Travel up to 15% for field validation and test events.
