Job description
The Student Health and Well-Being Primary Care is recruiting a Women's Health Nurse Practitionerto work 5 days a week (37.5 hours per week). This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Primary Care. The nurse practitioner will work collaboratively with other nurse practitioners and physicians.
The Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) is responsible for providing high quality and effective patient care through the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness and injury in the gynecological field. The Women's Health Nurse Practitioner provides direct patient care with a significant emphasis on health maintenance and preventive measures, and shares responsibility for the provision of high-quality health care in compliance with state, federal, and ambulatory accreditation requirements.
This Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) will split their time between the Homewood & East Baltimore campuses. The WHNP will work collaboratively with other nurse practitioners and physicians across JHU's division of Student Health and Well-Being on other campuses across the University and may be called to provide care at any time at other locations, including our DC campus.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Provide women's health services as follows
- Annual gynecologic/well-women's exams.
- Problem-based care, including assessment and management of vaginal complaints.
- Evaluation and management of
o Breast problems
o UTIs
o Menstrual irregularities and vaginal bleeding
o Hirsutism
o Abnormal Pap smears
o Chronic pelvic pain
o Sexual Dysfunction/Problems
o Gender Affirming Care
o Vulvitis/Vaginitis (using microscopy)
- Contraceptive management, including initiation and surveillance of contraceptive methods; management of contraceptive side effects; providing contraception to medically complex patients, either alone or in consultation with a physician.
- Placement and management and removal of contraceptive implants and intrauterine devices.
- Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.
- Women's health issue consultations for SHWC providers.
- Assess patients using skills in interviewing, history-taking and physical diagnosis, and initial screening and diagnostic tests.
- Apply evidence-based and shared decision-making when assessing and treating patients.
- Provide continuity of care and coordination of available healthcare services using appropriate referral to agencies and private physicians.
- Assume responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff and departmental needs.
- Systematically record information in an electronic medical record in accordance with university, state, and federal medical/legal requirements.
- Provide independent management of GYN complaints, including counseling, testing, diagnosis, treatment, and/or follow-up.
- Refer patients appropriately to gynecologic specialty providers as needed in the case of issues outside the scope of the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner.
- Attend SHWC educational programs and show evidence of continued self-development and professional involvement by participating in activities and educational programs of professional organizations.
- Occasional attendance at university events where SHWB staff is expected to be present.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- The successful candidate should have experience working with diverse patient populations and appreciate and relate effectively to individuals who hold multiple, intersecting identities including but not limited to, historically marginalized and underrepresented populations, various ages and developmental status, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, international status, disability, gender and sexual identities, and presentations.
- Demonstrated competence in women's health, especially with young adult population.
- Philosophical commitment to the care, development and education of students.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of health care to a diverse student/adult population.
- Proven ability to relate effectively to a wide variety of people of various ages and backgrounds including and understanding and appreciation of gender, cultural, ethnic and international differences.
- Experience and capability to use electronic medical record.
- Master's Degree in Nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
- Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
- (NPs working on inpatient floors require Acute Care NP certification)
- Additional experience may substitute for Master's Degree.
- College health experience preferred.
- Two to four years of clinical experience as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner preferred.
