What is continuous monitoring?

Continuous monitoring is the ongoing process of collecting, analyzing, and evaluating information about an organization's systems, networks, and operations to detect security threats, compliance issues, or performance problems in real time. This approach helps organizations identify and respond to risks quickly, maintain regulatory compliance, and ensure the security and reliability of their IT environments. Continuous monitoring is widely used in cybersecurity, IT operations, and compliance management to provide up-to-date visibility into system health and vulnerabilities.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in continuous monitoring roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Continuous Monitoring often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of real-time data, ensuring timely detection of anomalies, and maintaining effective communication with cross-functional teams. Staying current with evolving compliance requirements and integrating new monitoring tools can also be demanding. These challenges can be addressed by leveraging automated monitoring solutions, participating in ongoing training, and establishing clear processes for incident response and reporting. Collaborating closely with IT, security, and compliance teams ensures that monitoring practices remain robust and effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a continuous monitoring specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Continuous Monitoring Specialist, you need a strong background in information security, risk management, and familiarity with frameworks like NIST or ISO, usually supported by a degree in cybersecurity or related fields. Proficiency with security information and event management (SIEM) tools, vulnerability scanners, and compliance platforms is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as CISSP or CISA. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying and reporting threats. These skills and qualifications ensure robust, real-time security oversight and help organizations proactively mitigate risks.

What is the difference between Continuous Monitoring vs Security Analyst?

AspectContinuous MonitoringSecurity Analyst
Primary RoleOngoing assessment of security systems and infrastructure to detect vulnerabilities and threatsAnalyzing security incidents, investigating breaches, and developing security strategies
Required CredentialsCertifications like CISSP, CISA, or Security+ often preferredCertifications such as CISSP, Security+, or CEH commonly required
Work EnvironmentTypically in security operations centers (SOCs) or IT departmentsIn security teams, incident response units, or IT security departments
Industry UsageUsed across industries for compliance and threat detectionUsed in cybersecurity teams for threat analysis and response

While both roles focus on security, Continuous Monitoring emphasizes real-time system oversight, whereas Security Analysts analyze incidents and develop security measures. They often work together to ensure comprehensive cybersecurity defense.

Join the NASA Wallops Flight Facility team and help power the critical IT and network infrastructure that enables some of NASA’s most important space missions. As an Information Technology Specialist on the Wallops Range Contract, you will provide senior-level system administration, network operations, and cybersecurity leadership for the Wallops Range systems that support sounding rockets, launch vehicles, UAS, balloons, and Artemis human spaceflight network operations. With more than 20 global tracking sites and frequent mobile deployments, your expertise in NASCOM, real-time data distribution, Range Mission Network, and mission-critical IT will directly contribute to the success of over 40 NASA missions. If you thrive in high-stakes, real-time operational environments and want to make a tangible impact on space exploration, this is the role for you.

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide comprehensive system administration and configuration management for all Range IT systems including servers, networks, NASCOM, video distribution, Technical Control, and specialized data processing systems (RADAC, VTARS, etc.).
  • Lead implementation of cybersecurity programs (FISMA, RMF, STIGs, Continuous Monitoring, ATO maintenance) and develop/update Range IT Security Plans per NPR 2810.1F.
  • Operate, maintain, and sustain NASA Communications (NASCOM) – the primary interface for RCC internal/external communications and real-time data distribution.
  • Manage WAN/LAN interfaces and lines of demarcation for fixed and mobile range sites; develop and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and perform configuration control.
  • Provide direct IT support during pre-launch, countdown, launch, and post-mission phases in RCC and MOCC; rapidly diagnose and resolve network, server, or data distribution anomalies.
  • Support mobile/deployed IT components for range instrumentation during worldwide campaigns; perform system admin and troubleshooting in remote environments.
  • Mentor junior IT staff, lead complex troubleshooting efforts, and contribute to process improvement and training initiatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, Cybersecurity, or closely related technical field from an accredited institution. Master’s degree preferred.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Minimum eight (8) to ten (10) years of progressive experience in system administration, network operations, and/or cybersecurity for mission-critical or real-time operational environments (aerospace, launch range, or DoD/NASA experience strongly preferred).
  • Demonstrated expertise administering Windows Server and Linux environments, virtualization platforms, Active Directory, and enterprise networking (switches, routers, firewalls, fiber).
  • Strong hands-on experience with cybersecurity frameworks: FISMA, RMF, STIG implementation, vulnerability management, patching/compliance, and ATO processes.
  • Experience supporting real-time or high-availability mission operations (countdown/launch windows) with rapid troubleshooting under time pressure.
  • Active U.S. Secret security clearance (or ability to obtain/maintain). U.S. citizenship required.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills; proven ability to work independently or lead integrated Government-Contractor teams.
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to remote sites for extended periods and support irregular hours during launch campaigns.

LOCATION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

On-site at Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, VA. Hybrid work schedule may be approved. Frequent deployments to remote range sites (including Poker Flat Research Range, AK) are required.

SECURITY CLEARANCE:

Must have ability to obtain and maintain a minimum Secret security clearance. Active Secret clearance preferred.
