Cuningham

Phoenix, AZ

Full-time

Job description

At Cuningham, we design a better world with deep respect for the real one, working toward a world made better by selfless design. Our Phoenix studio brings that purpose to life through a portfolio built on a strong healthcare foundation and extending into workplace, entertainment, and beyond - powered by a team that leads with curiosity, craft, and a shared commitment to getting better together.

This is a role built for growth. Whether you're a Project Architect ready to step into project management, or a Project Manager who wants to stay close to design and technical delivery, you'll have the room to develop a well-rounded skill set while leading projects across a range of market sectors.

We're looking for someone who thrives in front of clients - building trust, setting clear expectations, and earning confidence - while working just as effectively behind the scenes with internal teams. You'll bring the leadership and organizational instincts to shape fees and schedules, manage resources, and steer projects to a strong finish, all while staying enthusiastic about the variety our portfolio offers, healthcare and beyond.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Lead design solutions, coordination, and production across small to medium-scale projects, through all phases, in a collaborative, iterative process.
  • Partner with the Project Manager to build a high-performing team and support member growth through thoughtful task assignment and mentorship.
  • Lead client communication, managing expectations, and providing clear, bi-directional feedback.
  • Champion regenerative design approaches that benefit the built, social, and natural environments.
  • Coordinate with consultants and contractors to drive strong design outcomes.
  • Identify project risks early and raise concerns with the Project Manager and Project Executive.
  • Lead code review, envelope system design, and resolution of complex code conditions.
  • Own the QA/QC process and ensure a complete, quality set of contract documents.
  • Lead coordination with the specs team and communication with the local AHJ.
  • Support construction administration, site observations, and verifications.
  • Contribute to project pursuits, including proposals, interviews, and related content.
  • Maintain responsible control over submissions requiring your seal.
What We Look For:
  • Licensed Architect (or actively pursuing licensure)
  • 6+ years of experience leading design and documentation on small to medium-scale projects.
  • Healthcare design experience, or strong interest in growing into the healthcare market, along with flexibility to work across other sectors.
  • A naturally curious problem solver who enjoys learning new things and finding better ways to work.
  • Someone who takes pride in the details and thrives on solving difficult technical challenges.
  • Solid technical grounding in code review, building envelope systems, and construction documentation, with the judgment to balance bold ideas with what is realistic, feasible, sustainable, and durable.
  • A collaborative leader who shares knowledge, mentors others, and helps raise the bar for the whole team.
  • Someone who shows up with respect, empathy, and genuine commitment to teammates and clients alike.
$100,000 - $145,000 a year
This range reflects both the Project Architect and Project Manager levels. Placement within the range, and the specific role offered, will be determined by the candidate's years and type of experience relative to the role's requirements.

Compensation provided is based on our national range which varies by work location and may also depend on accreditation, experience and responsibilities.  Our talent management team can share more about the specific salary range for your location during the hiring process.
Compensation range updated 1/24/2026
Benefits: Cuningham offers a variety of benefits to employees including; health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, 401k retirement savings plan, paid holidays, and paid time off.

Why Cuningham?

At Cuningham, we believe the best work happens when people are supported, challenged, and connected. Whether collaborating across teams, engaging with our communities, or shaping meaningful design solutions, we bring pragmatic creativity and disciplined execution to every project - and we support each other through it all.

We nurture an equitable work environment where curiosity is celebrated, craft is valued, and growth is prioritized. Alongside a team that brings low-ego expertise and active leadership day-to-day, you'll work on complex, high-stakes projects that demand bold thinking and disciplined delivery.
