Job description

Position Summary

The Content Manager serves as Morris Animal Foundation's (MAF) primary owner of written content production, and a key consensus builder in MAF's cross-functional content strategy, producing, editing and coordinating copy across donor communications, fundraising campaigns, scientific program materials, web, email, social media and researcher-facing channels. This role sits at the intersection of science, storytelling and technology, translating complex research into clear, compelling narratives that connect donors, supporters and the public to MAF's mission.

Working closely with the Marketing, Development and Scientific Programs teams, the Content Manager ensures that MAF content reflects a unified voice, a clear scientific foundation and a meaningful connection between donor support and research impact.

This role is central to MAF's content strategy and AI integration efforts. The Content Manager will help build, refine and maintain MAF's brand and writing agent, using strong editorial judgment, scientific curiosity and audience awareness to improve the quality, consistency and scalability of MAF content.

The successful candidate will bring scientific curiosity, enthusiasm for emerging technology, and the ability to move fluidly between audiences, from researchers and veterinary professionals to donors, pet owners and animal health advocates.

Responsibilities of Position

Content Creation & Unified Voice

• Serve as the primary writer and editor for MAF content, including donor emails, fundraising campaigns, blogs, social media copy, web pages, researcher communications, grant announcements, study updates, event materials and print collateral.

• Develop and maintain a consistent MAF voice and tone across content types and audiences, adapting style and complexity while preserving brand integrity.

• Translate scientific research, program updates and study findings into clear, engaging content for donor and lay audiences, as well as technically accurate communications for researchers and veterinary professionals.

• Align content with campaign strategy, editorial calendars and organizational priorities established by the Director of Marketing.

• Collaborate closely with the Graphic & UX Designer from concept through execution to create integrated content experiences across web, email, social, campaign and print channels. Ensure messaging, design, layout and user experience work together to achieve communication and fundraising goals.

• Coordinate content development across departments, gathering input from subject matter experts while maintaining editorial ownership and final accountability for content quality and consistency.

• Review and refine written communications prior to publication or distribution to ensure accuracy, brand alignment and editorial quality.

Scientific Programs Content

• Serve as a collaborative content partner to the Scientific Programs team, helping translate research priorities, scientific expertise and program goals into clear, audience-appropriate communications.

• Establish and maintain familiarity with MAF-funded research, scientific platforms, grant portfolios and emerging areas of focus.

• Write and edit scientific communications, including study updates, researcher communications, grant announcements, RFP alerts, program materials and web content.

• Translate complex scientific concepts into clear, engaging content for donors, study participants, pet owners and other non-scientific audiences while preserving scientific accuracy.

• Collaborate with Scientific Programs staff to review and refine content, ensuring accuracy, clarity and alignment with organizational messaging.

Fundraising & Donor Communications

• Serve as a collaborative content partner to the Development team, helping translate fundraising priorities, donor insights and campaign objectives into compelling donor-facing communications.

• Write and edit donor-facing content, including fundraising campaigns, appeals, acknowledgments, impact reports, stewardship communications and major donor materials.

• Develop content for email, campaign landing pages, direct mail, social media and paid media campaigns that connect donors to MAF's mission, research impact and funding priorities.

• Contribute to campaign planning by providing content strategy input, messaging recommendations and narrative frameworks that support fundraising goals.

AI Tools & Content Technology

• Partner with Marketing and IT leadership to build, refine and maintain MAF's brand and writing agent, a custom AI tool informed by MAF's voice, scientific platforms and messaging architecture.

• Implement, maintain and evolve the content architecture that informs the agent, including voice guidelines, audience frameworks, messaging hierarchies, editorial standards and platform-specific content strategies.

• Use the agent and other AI writing tools to produce, review and refine content across channels and audiences.

• Apply strong editorial judgment to evaluate AI-generated content, identify gaps, correct inaccuracies and maintain quality across output.

• Maintain and iterate on the agent as MAF's scientific platforms, messaging strategy and content needs evolve.

• Stay current with developments in AI writing tools and content technology, and support responsible, effective AI integration within MAF.

Position Requirements

• Bachelor's degree required; degree or coursework in journalism, communications, English, biology or a related field preferred.

• 5+ years of professional writing and content development experience, with a demonstrated portfolio spanning multiple content types and audiences.

• Exceptional writing, editing and storytelling skills, with the ability to adapt voice and complexity for scientific and donor-facing contexts.

• Demonstrated ability to understand and communicate scientific concepts accurately and accessibly; prior experience writing about health, science or research strongly preferred.

• Proven consensus-building and interpersonal skills, with the ability to gather and reconcile input from cross-functional partners, guide collaborative content decisions and maintain editorial ownership while keeping stakeholders engaged and bought in.

• Experience using and/or helping develop AI-supported writing workflows, with the editorial judgment to review, refine and improve AI-generated content.

• Familiarity with content management systems, email marketing platforms and project management software.

• Highly organized and self-directed, with the ability to manage multiple content projects simultaneously across varying deadlines and stakeholders.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, particularly when handling scientific or data-driven content.
