What is a Contamination Control Engineer job?

A Contamination Control Engineer is responsible for identifying, mitigating, and preventing contamination in controlled environments such as cleanrooms, manufacturing facilities, and laboratories. They develop and enforce protocols to control particles, microbes, and other contaminants that could impact product quality and safety. Their role often involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards. Additionally, they conduct risk assessments, implement contamination control strategies, and oversee facility cleanliness to maintain optimal working conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contamination Control Engineer position, and why are they important?

A successful Contamination Control Engineer typically holds a degree in engineering or a related scientific field and possesses expertise in contamination control protocols, cleanroom practices, and environmental monitoring. Familiarity with relevant standards (such as ISO 14644), particulate and microbial detection systems, and certification in contamination control or cleanroom operations are often essential. Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help these engineers implement rigorous protocols and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial to ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, maintaining product quality, and protecting critical manufacturing or laboratory environments from contamination risks.

What are the typical challenges faced by Contamination Control Engineers in the workplace?

Contamination Control Engineers often encounter the challenge of identifying and mitigating sources of particulate and microbial contamination in highly regulated environments such as pharmaceutical, semiconductor, or aerospace facilities. They must stay updated with evolving industry standards and continuously optimize processes despite changes in production or facility design. Collaboration with quality assurance, production, and facilities teams is routine, requiring strong communication to implement preventive measures effectively. These challenges can be rewarding, as overcoming them is essential to ensuring product quality, regulatory compliance, and a safe working environment.

About ECS Water Solutionsย

ECSโ€™s Water Solutions group provides design, operation, and management of groundwater, surface water, and construction dewatering treatment systems. The team delivers turnkey solutions โ€” from permitting and design through startup, optimization, and long-term system maintenance โ€” helping clients comply with environmental regulations and achieve cost-effective, sustainable outcomes.ย
Youโ€™ll join a collaborative team of environmental engineers and scientists supporting projects across ECSโ€™s national footprint. Our systems treat a variety of contaminants of concern and support both temporary construction-phase and permanent remediation applications.ย

Position Summaryย

The Remediation Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, and oversight of groundwater and surface water remediation systems within the Water Solutions group. This position involves hands-on field work, engineering design, project management, and client interface.
Youโ€™ll manage projects from concept through construction and commissioning, helping to deliver high-quality, practical, and regulatory-compliant treatment system designs.ย

Responsibilitiesย

Project Management & Technical Executionย

  • Manage water treatment and remediation projects from proposal through delivery, including scope, budget, and schedule.ย
  • Design and oversee both temporary dewatering treatment systems and permanent remedial systems for groundwater and surface water applications.ย
  • Develop engineering drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and permit applications for treatment systems such as filtration, carbon and other media adsorption, air stripping, and chemical treatment.ย
  • Conduct and interpret hydrogeologic and contaminant fate and transport evaluations to guide system design.ย
  • Support pilot tests, treatability studies, and system startups.ย
  • Provide field oversight during installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance monitoring.ย
  • Review project deliverables for QA/QC compliance and consistency with ECS standards.ย
  • Ensure project safety and adherence to company health and safety policies.ย
  • Prepare project invoices and assist with collections as required.ย

Client Relationships & Business Developmentย

  • Maintain and expand relationships with new and existing clients across private and public sectors.ย
  • Prepare technical proposals, scopes of work, and budgets in collaboration with the Water Solutions Group Manager and senior staff.ย
  • Participate in meetings with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.ย
  • Support business development activities through client presentations and conference participation.ย

Staff Developmentย

  • Mentor and train junior engineers and field staff in system design, installation, and monitoring procedures.ย
  • Promote ECS technical standards and safety-first culture.ย
  • Contribute to internal training and development programs within the Water Solutions team.ย

Qualifications

Qualificationsย

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Environmental, Civil, or Chemical Engineering required; Masterโ€™s degree preferred.ย
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) required, or ability to obtain reciprocityย
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in groundwater/surface water remediation and water treatment system design.ย
  • Demonstrated experience designing and managing water treatment or remediation systems (e.g., pump-and-treat, mechanical and media filtration, adsorption media, or chemical treatment).ย
  • Strong understanding of hydrogeologic and chemical processes governing contaminant behavior.ย
  • Proficiency with developing Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) within AutoCAD and other Autodesk Programs.ย
  • Experience with hydraulic and contaminant transport modeling tools (e.g., MODFLOW, MT3D, GIS or similar).ย
  • Ability to oversee and support field operations, including startup, sampling, and troubleshooting.ย
  • Proven project management skills with the ability to deliver projects on schedule and within budget.ย
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.ย
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (or ability to obtain).ย
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and willingness to travel up to 30%.ย

Preferred Qualificationsย

  • Experience with NPDES or temporary discharge permitting.ย
  • Familiarity with advanced in-situ or ex-situ remediation technologies (e.g., bioremediation, chemical oxidation/reduction, PFAS treatment).ย
  • Experience with vapor mitigation or air handling systems.ย
  • Demonstrated client-facing and business development experience.ย

Why Join ECS?ย

  • Opportunity to lead technically challenging projects with measurable environmental impact.ย
  • Collaboration with a nationwide Environmental Services and Water Solutions team of experienced professionals.ย
  • Supportive work environment that values innovation, professional growth, and work-life balance.ย
  • Competitive compensation with performance-based bonuses.ย
  • Comprehensive benefits including:ย
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)ย
  • 401(k) with up to 4% matchย
