POSITION SUMMARY:                  

Provides essential support to Reefer Department operations by performing general physical maintenance work. This position is responsible for inspecting and preparing refrigerated containers, assisting with agriculture inspections, and supporting mechanics with maintenance-related tasks, while following safe work practices in a fast-paced terminal environment. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. GEOGRAPHIC REGION:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required 

  • Experience and ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, pressure washers, saws, drills, wrenches, hammers, scrapers, and hammers.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak basic English.
  • Must be able to accurately process alpha/numeric information.
  • Possess organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to obtain internal forklift certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, extended hours, holidays, and/or weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors, and fellow employees.
  • Ability to think logically, follow procedures, and instructions, and make sound decisions.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of employment.

Preferred 

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience operating a forklift at OSHA standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary 

  • Performs pre-trip cleaning and washing of reefer containers, including sweeping, pressure washing, and debris removal.
  • Inspects empty reefer containers for damage, cleanliness, and serviceability; reports deficiencies as needed.
  • Applies and maintains container status tags to identify equipment readiness, repair needs, and wash requirements.
  • Assists with plugging and unplugging reefer containers in accordance with operational and safety procedures.
  • Supports reefer mechanics with pre-trip inspections and preparation of reefer units and chassis.
  • Assists with the execution of agriculture inspections.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area while adhering to all safety requirements.
  • Maintains awareness of surrounding equipment, vehicle traffic, and personnel to promote a safe work environment.

Secondary

  • Assists with updating container locations in the AS400 system.
  • Supports intermodal equipment inventory activities.
  • Transfers cargo from one container to another as needed.
  • May rearrange cargo inside a produce load to have the load fumigated.
  • Assists with the staging and strapping of vehicles.
  • Performs general maintenance work of the Reefer Mechanic areas inside and outside.
  • Operates a forklift to empty yard garbage bins, assist with the transportation of parts and genset units within the terminal, and other duties.  
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Subjection to physical and/or DOT screening may be required along with other tests as applicable.
  • The employee is continuously required to stand, walk, reach forward, and grasp.
  • The employee is frequently required to bend forward, twist, reach overhead, and exercise eye-hand coordination.
  • The employee is frequently required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, squat, pinch, exercise repetitive foot and wrist motion, finger dexterity, and eye-hand-foot coordination.
  • The employee must frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Report safety hazards.
  • Immediately report incidents involving injury, illness, or property damage.
  • Wear appropriate PPE as instructed by immediate supervisor.
  • Comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Refuse any unsafe task or operation.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training.
  • Be constantly aware of their personal safety and that of their coworkers.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Reports directly to the Reefer Mechanics Foreman and indirectly to the M&R Manager. Does not exercise supervision over any position.

CONDITIONS:

  • Exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind, and high humidity during day and night shifts.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
  • Moderate vibration with the use of a hydraulic seating system.
