Job description

Description Skilled work in the operation of refuse collection and disposal equipment on assigned routes. This position involves the operation of front loader refuse trucks emptying dumpster-type refuse containers, cardboard recycling truck, and yard debris claw-truck. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Division Manager through periodic inspections and discussions.

Eligible for 2 to 4% wage increase after 6 months for Class A or B license. Examples of Duties Drives front-loading refuse trucks on commercial routes emptying dumpsters, drives cardboard recycling truck, and drives yard debris claw-truck. Has thorough knowledge of assigned commercial dumpster routes.

Reports unusual situations to Supervisor or Foreman, i.e., dumpsters blocked by vehicles, trash wedged in dumpsters, dumpsters broken or unsafe, etc. Reports all vehicle defects to the appropriate Fleet Operations personnel. Follows up with Solid Waste Division Supervisor or foreman on the status of repairs or uncorrected conditions

Responsible for daily pre-trip inspection and performing light maintenance including, but not limited to, checking and adding fuel, water and oil, checking brakes, and checking lights. Responsible for daily truck maintenance including lubrication and cleaning/deodorizing of truck after completion of route. Fills out daily reports accurately and legibly.

Ensures accuracy of daily route sheets. Performs routine inspections of dumpsters on prescribed routes; notifies Supervisor of deteriorated, dangerous or unsanitary conditions. Empties trucks at prescribed designations in accordance with regulations.

Assists in training of lower classification employees in use of front loader units. Responsible for safe and courteous operations of truck while in route and during dumpster operation. Subject to overtime work and responds to job-related emergencies as needed.

Does related work as required. Education and Experience High school diploma required, and two (2) years experience in the operation of a variety of heavy equipment in refuse collection and disposal operations. Driver's License Requirement: Valid Florida Driver's License Classification B.

Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange information with others. This position is semi-active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crouching as needed throughout the day.

The employee must frequently lift or move items up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift or move items up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
