What is a container ship planner?

Container ship planners are logistics professionals who are responsible for organizing the loading and unloading of cargo containers on ships. They create detailed stowage plans that ensure containers are placed in a way that maximizes space, maintains the ship's balance, and allows for efficient unloading at each port. This role involves close coordination with port terminals, shipping lines, and other logistics teams to ensure safety, compliance with regulations, and timely shipments. Container ship planners use specialized software and must consider factors like container weight, destination, and hazardous material requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a container ship planner?

To thrive as a Container Ship Planner, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of maritime logistics, often supported by a degree in logistics, supply chain management, or a related field. Familiarity with stowage planning software, terminal operating systems (TOS), and cargo management platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work under pressure make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and timely loading and unloading of vessels, optimizing space utilization and minimizing delays in port operations.

What are the main challenges a container ship planner faces when coordinating cargo loading and unloading?

Container Ship Planners often encounter the challenge of optimizing space utilization while ensuring vessel stability and adhering to strict safety regulations. They must coordinate closely with port operations, shipping agents, and terminal staff to manage last-minute changes, such as unexpected cargo or schedule adjustments. Balancing time constraints with the need for accuracy and compliance makes problem-solving and adaptability essential skills for success in this role.

What is the difference between Container Ship Planner vs Port Operations Coordinator?

AspectContainer Ship PlannerPort Operations Coordinator

Both roles require logistics knowledge and work within maritime or port environments, but their specific responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

How hard is it to get a job on a container ship?

Securing a container ship planner position typically requires relevant maritime or logistics experience, strong organizational skills, and often certifications such as STCW. Competition can be high, and employers may prefer candidates with familiarity with shipping schedules, cargo handling, and planning software. Entry may involve starting in related roles or gaining maritime industry knowledge.

How much do you get paid to work on a container ship?

Container ship planners typically earn between $3,000 and $8,000 per month, depending on experience, location, and the shipping company. Salaries can vary based on the complexity of planning tasks, certifications, and the level of responsibility involved in coordinating cargo operations and vessel schedules.

How to become a container ship planner?

To become a container ship planner, candidates typically need a background in logistics, supply chain management, or maritime studies, along with strong organizational and communication skills. Relevant experience in shipping operations, familiarity with scheduling software, and industry certifications can enhance job prospects. Job Description:

About the Role
We're looking for a hands-on Technical Product Manager to work directly with engineering on our Kubernetes and container platform (e.g., Morpheus HKS- Kubernetes Service). This role is more about being in the weeds - writing detailed specs, testing features, generate technical content, digging into customer/support issues, and helping engineering ship the right thing correctly.

What You'll Do

  • Write detailed product requirements and technical specs for Kubernetes/container features (cluster lifecycle, CSI/storage integration, CNI/networking, autoscaling, upgrades) that engineering can build directly against.
  • Get hands-on with the product - deploy clusters, test new features, reproduce customer/support issues, and validate fixes before they ship.
  • Work day-to-day with engineers in sprint planning, backlog grooming, and design reviews - not just handing off requirements, but actively problem-solving alongside them.
  • Triage and prioritize incoming bugs, customer escalations, and feature requests based on technical severity and impact.
  • Partner with QA/engineering to define test plans and acceptance criteria for new Kubernetes capabilities.
  • Support field/sales engineering with technical answers, demos, and troubleshooting for Kubernetes-related customer questions.
  • Track competitive Kubernetes distributions and ecosystem tools hands-on (installing, testing, comparing) to inform feature decisions with direct technical evidence, not just market reports.
  • Contribute to release notes, technical documentation, and internal enablement content.

Required Background

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in product management or a hands-on technical role (engineering, DevOps, SRE) with meaningful direct Kubernetes/container experience.
  • Comfortable in a terminal - able to stand up a cluster, read logs, and troubleshoot without relying entirely on engineering to explain what's happening.

Technical Skills We're Looking For

  • Kubernetes core: hands-on experience with control plane components, kubelet, RBAC, namespaces, cluster autoscaling, and upgrade/lifecycle workflows - enough to operate a cluster yourself, not just describe one.
  • CSI (Container Storage Interface): practical experience with dynamic volume provisioning, snapshots, and StorageClass/storage policy configuration.
  • CNI/SDN networking: working knowledge of pod networking, overlay networks, and troubleshooting connectivity issues.
  • Multi-cluster/multi-tenant environments: hands-on exposure to namespace isolation and multi-tenancy configurations.
  • Infrastructure-as-Code: ability to read/write basic Terraform or Ansible for provisioning and testing.
  • CNCF ecosystem tools: direct experience installing/operating Prometheus, Grafana, Calico, or similar add-ons.
  • Scripting/basic coding: comfortable with Python, Bash, or Go for testing, automation, or quick tooling.
  • Hybrid virtualization awareness(nice to have): exposure to Kubernetes running on VMware, KVM-based hypervisors, or bare metal.

Soft Skills

  • Detail-oriented and comfortable getting into technical specifics rather than staying at the strategy level.
  • Strong collaborator who earns credibility with engineers through technical competence, not just process management.
  • Good written communicator for specs, bug reports, and technical documentation.
