What is a container owner operator?

A Container Owner Operator is an independent truck driver who owns and operates their own truck to transport shipping containers. They typically work with ports, rail yards, and shipping companies to move containers between locations. Unlike company drivers, owner-operators handle their own business expenses, such as fuel, maintenance, and insurance. This role offers greater earning potential and flexibility but also requires strong business management skills. Many Container Owner Operators lease onto larger carriers or work independently to find freight loads.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a container owner operator?

Successful Container Owner Operators require a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), experience with freight logistics, and the ability to handle and maintain tractor-trailer equipment reliably. Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs), dispatch software, and safety inspection tools is essential for compliance and efficient operations. Strong time management, problem-solving, and customer service skills help operators build trust and effectively navigate challenges on the road. These skills ensure timely, safe cargo deliveries and successful management of both business and customer relationships.

What are some common challenges faced by container owner operators, and how can they be managed?

Container Owner Operators often face challenges such as tight delivery schedules, variable fuel costs, port delays, and the responsibility of maintaining their own vehicles. Staying organized with scheduling tools, maintaining open communication with dispatchers, and investing in regular preventative maintenance can help manage these issues. Additionally, understanding port procedures and establishing relationships with terminal operators can streamline pickups and drop-offs. Adaptability and proactive planning are key for navigating these challenges and ensuring consistent, profitable operations.

Job description

Who We Are:
At Bandwidth, we shape how the world connects. We're the global communications software company and Tier 1 network operator with global reach. The voice, messaging, and emergency services infrastructure behind the brands and apps you use every day.
Because we own the network we build on, the problems you'll solve here are bigger, more complex, and more impactful. And as communications shifts to AI, we're the infrastructure layer making it possible.
We call ourselves BANDmates because building something this big takes collaboration, different perspectives, and the freedom to bring your authentic self to the table.
We're experts who speak like humans. Ready to build what's next? #JoinTheBand
Our Hiring Team Mission:
On the Voice team, we build and operate the systems that power reliable voice connectivity across Bandwidth's network. Our work spans the full lifecycle of voice services - from provisioning and configuration to ongoing management - across multiple downstream systems that sit directly in the path of live customer traffic.
We are an engineering led organization with a focus on creating automation that is safe, scalable, and resilient, allowing voice and communications platforms to connect seamlessly to our carrier infrastructure. If you enjoy working at the intersection of application logic and real network infrastructure - writing code that orchestrates external systems, with reliability and serving our customers as the top priority - this is that kind of work.
What We Are Looking For:
We are looking for a talented and energetic Software Engineer who is motivated to learn, develop, and collaborate within a highly agile environment. We're seeking a team oriented self-starter with a goal of becoming a technology leader in the coming years.
  • You own your code and apps fully end-to-end, from design to development to operations and monitoring in production.
  • You use AI effectively across the full development lifecycle and review AI-generated code with the same rigor as human-written code: security, style, and compliance standards.
  • You utilize AI to innovate and add customer value.

What You'll Do:
In voice, we process billions of calls per month, via a variety of communication channels - empowering customers to communicate reliably, freely and at scale.
You will:
  • Contribute to solutions from start to finish, collaborating across teams to iteratively ship value.
  • Work with a team of software engineers with experience in distributed microservices and full stack systems.
  • Collaborate closely with product owners to create solutions that deliver the power to communicate.
  • Drive innovation within Voice.

What You Need:
If you're our person, you probably look like this:
  • Applicants should have a minimum of 2+ years of experience designing web services and service-oriented architectures in a modern programming language (Java, C#, or Go).
  • Hands on experience with AI
  • An understanding of IP networking and protocols, HTTP, and REST.
  • Experience with test automation patterns and frameworks.
  • You're familiar with relational and non-relational database systems
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • A 4-year technical degree or equivalent experience.

Bonus Points:
Wow, it'd be really great if also:
  • Have designed and built AI Agents
  • You have experience with AWS or another cloud platform, and you "get" how scalable cloud applications are engineered
  • You have worked with Docker containers and Kubernetes

The Whole Person Promise:
At Bandwidth, we're pretty proud of our corporate culture, which is rooted in our "Whole Person Promise." We promise all employees that they can have meaningful work AND a full life, and we provide a work environment geared toward enriching your body, mind, and spirit. How do we do that? Well...
  • 100% company-paid Medical, Vision, & Dental coverage for you and your family with low deductibles and low out-of-pocket expenses.
  • All new hires receive four weeks of PTO.
  • PTO Embargo. When you take time off (of any kind!) you're embargoed from working. Bandmates and managers are not allowed to interrupt your PTO - not even with email.
  • Additional PTO can be earned throughout the year through volunteer hours and Bandwidth challenges.
  • "Mahalo moments" program grants additional time off for life's most important moments like graduations, buying a first home, getting married, wedding anniversaries (every five years), and the birth of a grandchild.
  • 90-Minute Workout Lunches and unlimited meetings with our very own nutritionist.

Are you excited about the position and its responsibilities, but not sure if you're 100% qualified? Do you feel you can work to help us crush the mission? If you answered 'yes' to both of these questions, we encourage you to apply! You won't want to miss the opportunity to be a part of the BAND.
