Job description

The Devices & Services Experience Design (DxD) team leads user experience and industrial design innovation across Amazon's device portfolio, including Echo, Fire TV, Fire Tablets, Alexa.com, and related mobile apps. Our team works at the intersection of design, product and engineering, creating meaningful hardware and software experiences that enhance customer lives. We believe in storytelling and thinking holistically to craft the "why" behind everything we ship.
Working closely with business and technology partners, we use research, design, and prototyping to guide early product development, bring clarity to engineering goals, and develop a user-centric point of view. This is where you come in.
As a Design Technologist, you will play a crucial role in our Design Technology team. Your primary responsibility will be to create complex user interactions that support user research, executive reviews, and other artifacts that effectively communicate design ideas. You will frequently collaborate with product teams, leveraging your technical expertise to solve design challenges. This often involves building functional prototypes at varying levels of fidelity to validate or invalidate the viability of concepts. Ultimately, your goal will be to create technical solutions that delight our customers.
Are you a passionate tinkerer who loves consumer electronics? A digital craftsperson excited to transform concepts into working code? Ready to make an impact on millions of customers? If so, we want to hear from you.
Key job responsibilities
- Build high-quality, functional prototypes that convey, prove, and advance the vision of future products
- Collaborate with design leadership and key stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle
- Work alongside designers, PMs, engineers, and other experts to drive concepts from idea to implementation
- Routinely take part in design reviews with UX Designers and regularly present your work to the team
A day in the life
As a Design Technologist working on the next generations of device user experiences, no two days are the same. You might start by reviewing a prototype showcasing a upcoming Alexa interaction, then dive into creative coding. After discussing technical feasibility with engineers, you shift to polishing visuals and motion for an executive review. Throughout, you problem-solve, push boundaries, and collaborate cross-functionally to invent the future of consumer electronics. It's a fast-paced, innovative environment where your deep technical skills and maker mindset are crucial to delivering transformative experiences for millions of customers.
About the team
Our team of design technologists work across multiple product lines, including Echo Show, Fire Tablet, Fire TV, and future Amazon devices. By staying at the forefront of emerging technologies, we are constantly exploring new ways to push the boundaries of what's possible. Whether it's integrating the latest machine learning capabilities or innovating on novel interaction models, our team thrives on the challenge of turning ambitious concepts into functional prototypes. We work closely with engineering to enable the best customer experiences, iterating on our designs based on user feedback and testing.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of front-end technologist, engineer, or UX prototyper experience
- Have coding samples in front end programming languages
- Have an available online portfolio
- Experience with web, mobile web, or mobile app front-end development
- Experience with UI design for complex workflows and for end users
- Experience taking a UX idea and turning it into code
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience designing and launching new products from the ground up
- Experience working cross-functionally across several teams both technical and non-technical
- Experience with embedded systems, consumer devices, or mobile apps
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Knowledge of software engineering best practices across the development life cycle, including agile methodologies, coding standards, code reviews, source management, build processes, testing, and operations
- Experience in taking a product from conception & definition phase through engineering design and taking it to market
- Hands-on experience designing, training, and implementing machine learning models and AI-driven systems.
- Proven ability to translate research concepts into functional prototypes that address complex business challenges
- Experience with implementing visual design systems, animations, and transitions into prototypes or applications.
