Role Overview
The Utility AI Consultant is the primary engine of high-velocity innovation, transforming ambitious agentic concepts into production-ready, cloud-native realities for the utilities industry. AI Practitioner who leverages Agentic Engineering to bypass traditional development bottlenecks, shipping high-fidelity solutions. You combine deep utility domain knowledge with technical mastery, designing the environment where human logic and AI autonomy converge to solve complex utility industry enigmas across the energy and water value chain.
Key Responsibilities
Utility Domain Application:
  • Apply deep understanding of utility business processes (metering/AMI, meter-to-cash, billing, outage management, grid operations, DER, customer care) to shape and contextualize AI-driven solutions.
  • Ensure prototypes and production solutions align with utility operational realities, regulatory constraints, and industry standards.

Collaboration & Analysis:
  • Support Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and client teams in shaping the technical architecture and feasibility of AI-driven solutions.
  • Gather requirements, define user stories, and present prototypes and solutions to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to client deliverables, focusing on technical implementation and roadmap development.

Technology & Innovation:
  • Stay current with advancements in Agentic AI frameworks, large language models (LLMs), and cloud developer tools.
  • Optimize solutions for speed, user experience, and visual fidelity.

Prototype & Solution Development (Nice to have):
  • Rapidly develop functional, front-end, and back-end solutions (using tools like Gemini, Copilot, Claude, etc., and direct coding) that solve real-world utility business challenges.
  • Translate conceptual designs and mockups into scalable, cloud-hosted applications.

Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
Experience: 8-15 years of overall experience, with utility industry knowledge as the primary requirement, complemented by software development, cloud engineering, or a highly technical role.
Domain Expertise (Primary):
  • Strong utility industry knowledge across electric, gas, and/or water.
  • Solid understanding of utility business processes such as AMI/metering, meter-to-cash, billing, CIS, outage and grid operations, DER, and customer experience.

Technical Skills:
  • Experience utilizing AI coding tools (e.g., Gemini, Copilot, Claude) to accelerate development-demonstrating AI-native development practices.
  • Familiarity with creating interactive, data-driven interfaces.

*Mindset: AI-native approach to problem-solving, leveraging generative AI tools to maximize productivity and code quality.
*Travel: willingness to travel extensively as client needs require.
Required Education & Work Authorization:
Education: Bachelor's degree required; MBA or master's strongly preferred.
Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now or in the future.
Salary & Compensation:
Salary: Applications will be accepted until July 10 th , 2026. The annual salary for this position is between $98,853.00 - $158,500.00 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
Incentives: Eligible for Cognizant's discretionary annual incentive program and stock awards, subject to applicable plan terms.
