Construction surveyors working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple contractors, adapting to changing site conditions, and maintaining accurate measurements despite heavy equipment traffic and ongoing construction activity. Effective communication and adaptability are essential, as surveyors must frequently update site layouts and resolve discrepancies in real time. Additionally, managing tight schedules and ensuring compliance with safety regulations require strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

What is a construction surveyor?

Construction surveyors are professionals who measure and map land, structures, and construction sites to ensure building projects are completed accurately according to design plans. They use specialized equipment to determine property boundaries, create site layouts, and check elevation and alignment during construction. Their work is essential for preventing costly mistakes, ensuring safety, and complying with legal requirements throughout the building process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a construction surveyor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Construction Surveyor, you need a solid understanding of land surveying principles, mathematics, and site measurement, typically supported by a degree or certification in surveying or civil engineering. Proficiency with surveying equipment (such as total stations and GPS), CAD software, and data analysis tools is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring accuracy and coordinating with construction teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for providing precise site data, minimizing costly errors, and supporting successful project completion.

Job description

Survey - AutoCAD Technician - Civil Construction
Jacksonville, FL | Full-Time | Hourly
At Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Contractors, Inc., we don't just build infrastructure - we build life-changing infrastructure. We are a privately owned, employee-owned (ESOP) civil contracting firm performing work across public and private markets within a 300-mile radius of Jacksonville, FL.
We specialize in public works, water resources (including water and wastewater treatment plants), and site development, with expertise in underground utilities, roadway construction, and related civil infrastructure.
We are seeking a Survey Technician to support our construction survey operations in both the field and the office. This role is survey-first. We are looking for someone with hands-on construction survey experience who understands layout, control, and field data collection. AutoCAD skills are important, but a strong survey background is the priority, and CAD proficiency can be further developed for the right candidate.
If you come from a construction survey or crew chief background and want a long-term role supporting heavy civil work, this position is a strong fit.
What You'll DoSurvey & Field Operations (Primary Focus)
  • Perform construction survey layout, verification, and as-built data collection for civil projects including utilities, grading, and roadway work
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot GPS systems, robotic total stations, and data collectors
  • Support survey crews with layout, staking, control, and field verification
  • Verify site conditions, elevations, and alignments and identify discrepancies between plans and field conditions
  • Communicate field findings clearly with project managers, engineers, and field leadership
Office & CAD Support (Secondary Focus)
  • Process field survey data and assist with producing layout files and as-built documentation
  • Work in AutoCAD Civil 3D to support surfaces, points, alignments, and linework
  • Maintain organized survey and CAD files in accordance with company standards
  • Support digital workflows connecting survey data to construction operations
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
  • Interpret construction plans, specifications, and survey control information accurately
  • Coordinate closely with field crews, project engineers, and management
  • Assist in improving survey accuracy, workflows, and efficiency across projects
What We're Looking ForRequired Experience & Skills
  • 1-3+ years of construction survey experience (layout, utilities, grading, or civil site work)
  • Hands-on experience with GPS and total station equipment (Trimble, Topcon, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of construction layout, control, and as-built verification
  • Ability to read and interpret civil construction plans and specifications
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and accountability
  • Ability to work both outdoors in the field and in an office environment
Preferred (Not Required)
  • Crew Chief experience or experience leading survey layout operations
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D experience (training provided as needed)
  • Experience producing as-built drawings or survey documentation
  • Familiarity with construction software such as HCSS HeavyJob
You'll Succeed Here If You
  • Identify first as a surveyor, not just a CAD drafter
  • Take pride in accurate layout and dependable field data
  • Communicate clearly between field and office teams
  • Value safety, precision, and teamwork
  • Want to grow with an employee-owned company
Our Core Values (A.C.T.)
Accountability - Safety first, clear expectations, and ownership of results
Character - Integrity, humility, and trustworthiness
Team - Shared vision, servant leadership, and determination to succeed together
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience
  • Earned Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • 6 Paid Holidays
  • Annual Profit Sharing - participate in company-wide profit sharing once annual goals are achieved
  • Monthly Safety Bonus - earned when the company goes recordable-incident free
  • Comprehensive Health Coverage Options, including a 100% company-paid High Deductible Health Plan (employee-only coverage)
  • Dental, vision, short/long-term disability, and accident coverage
  • Up to $50,000 employer-paid life insurance
  • 401(k) with 100% match on the first 4%
  • Training, development, and professional growth opportunities
Work Schedule
  • Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM
  • 40-hour workweek; overtime as required
  • Occasional Saturdays depending on project needs
What We Expect
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen
  • Professional appearance and conduct
  • Commitment to Petticoat-Schmitt's values of Accountability, Character, and Teamwork

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
