Job Title: Construction Project Engineer

Job Description

This role offers an opportunity to join a major projects team within a fast-growing mechanical contractor, providing project management support on complex mechanical and plumbing construction projects. The Construction Project Engineer collaborates closely with project managers, field leadership, engineers, and detailers to help deliver high-quality, profitable projects through effective communication, scheduling, cost tracking, document control, and coordination. This position is ideal for early-career professionals who want to build strong mechanical systems knowledge and gain exposure to large-scale projects across the Pacific Northwest.

Responsibilities

  • Provide project management support to project managers by assisting with communication, negotiation, scheduling, tracking, document control, and forecasting of costs and profitability.
  • Track, forecast, and report labor hours and material costs to support accurate project financial management.
  • Assist in the buyout and procurement process of major equipment and subcontracts, ensuring timely and cost-effective purchasing.
  • Expedite and track deliveries of major equipment and materials to maintain project schedules.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of general conditions, scope of work, and specifications for project contracts and subcontracts.
  • Maintain and control project documents in compliance with internal standards and contractual requirements.
  • Collaborate with field labor supervision to plan, organize, and schedule project work, including preparation of integrated subcontract and contract project schedules.
  • Review contract drawings, detail drawings, and specifications to support accurate installation and coordination.
  • Prepare fabrication shop work packages, including detail drawing review, material take-offs, buyout, and development of man-hour fabrication budgets.
  • Support and collaborate with superintendents, foremen, engineers, detailers, and management to deliver quality and profitable projects.
  • Ensure full compliance with the Safety Program at the jobsite and promote a safe working environment.
  • Attend work regularly and arrive on time to support project and team needs.
  • Use software tools such as MS Outlook, Excel, Word, Bluebeam, Smartsheet, OneDrive, MS Teams, SharePoint, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Viewpoint Vista, Revit, and Stratus (with on-the-job training provided as needed).
  • Develop an understanding of construction sequencing, particularly as it relates to mechanical and plumbing scopes of work.
  • Maintain strong relationships with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and internal team members through professional communication and follow-through.
  • Develop and retain mechanical systems knowledge, including engineering, estimating, construction practices, and financial management.
  • Support estimating and BIM coordination activities as needed, contributing to preconstruction and coordination efforts.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of experience as a Project Engineer with a mechanical contractor.
  • At least 1 year of experience tracking construction materials and labor on active projects.
  • At least 1 year of experience communicating with subcontractors and clients regarding project schedules.
  • Project management experience in a construction environment.
  • Construction management experience with an emphasis on mechanical and plumbing scopes.
  • Experience with change order processes in construction projects.
  • Mechanical construction experience or exposure to mechanical systems.
  • Experience with procurement tracking and subcontractor management.
  • Proficiency with MS Outlook, Excel, and Word.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Construction Management (entry-level candidates with this education are welcome).
  • Mechanical design experience or coursework.
  • BIM coordination experience or exposure to coordinated models.
  • At least 1 year of experience with submittal processing, RFIs, and change orders (nice to have).
  • Experience supporting estimating activities for mechanical construction projects (nice to have).
  • Interest in developing deeper knowledge of mechanical systems engineering, estimating, construction practices, and financial management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment across field and office personnel.
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Work Environment

This position is primarily onsite at a major hospital construction project in Lakewood, WA, with the expectation of traveling to additional jobsites across the greater Seattle area, generally from Tacoma to Lynnwood. The role is embedded in active construction environments, working closely with field supervision, trades, and project teams to support day-to-day project execution. You will use a combination of office and field technologies, including project management software, collaboration platforms, and design tools, with training provided for many of these systems. The work environment emphasizes safety, teamwork, and professional communication while supporting large, complex mechanical projects in a fast-growing regional market.e

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lynnwood, WA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $36.00 - $43.00/hr.
