Job Description

The Construction Manager is responsible for ensuring the safe, timely, and cost-effective execution of Stepan’s capital projects typically between $1M and $3M. Key responsibilities of the role include organizing, and managing the scope of work, ensuring compliance with Stepan’s EHS&S policies, evaluating and challenging change orders, developing logistics and execution plans, and ensuring constructability through early participation in project development. Construction Manager promotes open communication among internal and external stakeholders, champions safe work practices, and maintains a strong field presence during project execution. A broad technical knowledge on electrical, instrumentation, motors, rotating equipment, fixed equipment and civil – structural. The Construction Manager reports to the Capital Construction Leader and through the assigned project manager.

Responsibilities include:
• Demonstrate expertise in construction work safety.  Learn, author and issue flawless safe work permits for General, Hot, Line-break, and confined space permits.
• Complete safety planning for day-to-day work, engaging Production and Safety personnel as needed to complete work successfully.
• Generate project and shutdown safe execution plans.
• Review construction scope with awarded contractors and confirm the contractor is aligned with the project expectations.
• Review construction in progress to confirm all scope items are being constructed as planned and indicated on drawings.
• Support the project scope control process by questioning and screening work scopes where appropriate to confirm all field work being completed is within the project scope or is supported by a project scope change.
• With input from contractors and project management, develop and set the project construction plan, setting the work sequence.  
• Develop duration based resourced leveled construction schedules using Microsoft Project to set the project schedule baseline.  Level of detail required based on nature of construction.
• Monitor construction progress to ensure work progresses as planned and update schedules accordingly. During shutdowns, present detailed updates to the integrated project team during daily update meetings or as otherwise agreed upon.
• Work with the PSSR Team Leader to schedule PSSR walk downs, set the commissioning schedule, and deliver project required documentation, especially Construction Quality Assurance documents, and approvals of SME acceptors to the commissioning process

Qualifications

• 5 years’ experience in heavy industrial manufacturing
• Chemical plant project execution experience required
• Capital Project execution experience required
• SAP and Ariba experience a plus
• MyTrack Contractor time management experience a plus
• PSM plant experience required
• Microsoft 360 competence
• Microsoft Project experience
• Familiarity with T&M, T&M NTE, Lump Sum, contracts

Education

• Bachelors degree in Engineering or Construction Management is preferred. A PMP is a plus.
• Equivalent years of technical hands-on experience may be considered in lieu of a technical degree.

Pay Range: $84,000 - $113,000

The salary range for this position is determined by considering a variety of factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and the location of the position.
