Position Overview

The Construction Manager oversees FTTH/Telecom construction crews. The Construction Manager’s responsibilities include monitoring crew performance and making recommendations for improvement, motivating and educating teams in areas of production, quality, and safety. This position ensures projects stay within budget, on schedule, and that required materials and equipment are available.

The Construction Manager is reliable, deadline-driven, able to demonstrate a sound understanding of safety regulations and building codes, and is able to transfer this knowledge to the team. Top-notch Construction Managers are leaders who can identify problems, troubleshoot, and find feasible solutions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure construction teams work together to deliver quality work to strict deadlines
  • Process production, labor, material, safety data submissions accurately and timely
  • Assist in building both underground and aerial aspects of the FTTH network, which requires strict quality standards; Supervise in-house and subcontract resources
  • Work closely with Project Manager (PM) and team to plan, schedule, update, and identify operational problems or obstacles
  • Assign appropriate workload and resources to construction crews
  • Accurately and effectively prepare written correspondence to project team
  • Attend project kick off and construction meetings when requested by PM
  • Assist PM in identifying and removing potential project roadblocks
  • Establish positive working relationships with management, staff, customers, vendors, and the public
  • In collaboration with HR, manage personnel issues, recommend promotions, and new positions
  • Ensure all employees have all necessary safety gear to foster a safe working environment
  • Recommend potential design changes to PM and Engineering PM for project
  • Recommend and arrange for training as needed for employees
  • Generate reports and provide feedback based upon information received and knowledge of industry standards and experience
  • Provide technical support for Field Operations and Customers
  • Customer service, including interfacing with the customer, providing guidance in getting the best solution for their application
  • Responsible for managing timelines and ensuring the schedule is maintained
  • Ensure start and completion dates for each project segment meet customer’s expectations. Pre-plan to ensure resources are available for the start of construction, splicing, and clean-up
  • Track daily production for each crew and ensure to achieve schedule demands at all times
  • Monitor and track work of contractors to ensure accountability and accuracy, as well as making sure that specifications are being met and standards are being followed for both construction and safety
  • Ensure that all crews have appropriate tools and equipment on site at all times
  • Other related projects and duties as required

Required Skills/Abilities

  • High school diploma or similar required; Bachelor’s degree in construction, business, management, or engineering preferred
  • 5+ years experience managing projects in the construction industry preferred
  • Project Management Experience on a second tier level desired
  • Experience in the FTTH/Telecom construction industry required; FTTH construction leadership experience preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required – CDL preferred with clean driving record
  • Ability to focus and keep calm under pressure in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment
  • Experience in scheduling projects, cost engineering, budgeting and forecasting costs, reporting project status and costs
  • Ability to creatively solve problems and implement change
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive teamwork environment and motivate a diverse technical and operations group as well as build confidence with clients
  • Positive, can-do attitude with a high level of integrity
  • Ability to work after hours, some weekends, and evenings when needed
  • Ability to relocate or travel to project locations

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, driving a vehicle, and/or standing
  • Must be able to work in a non-climate-controlled environment & inclement weather
  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable and sustained use of your arms, legs, and moving your entire body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, sitting, standing, lifting/handling of materials up to 75lbs, and safely negotiating a construction site and wear required PPE
