Summary:

Superintendents manage the activities of the workforce, materials, trucking, and equipment, and track daily and weekly progress of multiple mid- to large-size construction and paving projects, including complex jobs. All of this is to be accomplished in conjunction with practicing ethical business transactions, and adhering to the corporate policies, values, and beliefs while pursuing the company's short and long-range goals.

Superintendents coordinate field operations for construction and/or paving projects, including schedule, personnel assignments, equipment availability and maintenance, and coordination with owners, inspectors, and other Barriere departments. They ensure all procedures are properly followed. Superintendents communicate with other Superintendents, Field Engineers, Project Managers, Group Managers and Foremen within their Group daily to provide support on operational and personnel decisions.

Superintendents are directly responsible for decisions regarding crews, subcontractors, equipment, problem resolution, record-keeping, and overall success of projects. They plan work 1-4 weeks in advance.

Superintendents must have effective communication skills and proven problem-solving ability to make sound business decisions in a fast-paced environment. Ensuring proper communication among all project teams under their Supervision is a critical role of the Superintendent.

Superintendents also help and teach others, including developing new Foremen into future Superintendents.

Superintendents must ensure that all company safety policies are being followed and that all job sites are working safely.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Participate in weekly toolbox talks, TAR meetings, and all safety programs; ensure Foremen follow safety plans

Oversee hiring, staffing, and training for non-exempt field positions, and provide weekly updates at Group staff meeting

Work closely with the Equipment/Logistics Department daily to ensure jobs are resourced properly

Assist Estimator/Project Manager in pre-bid process; participate in pre-construction planning, ensure resources are available

Assist Foremen in preparing progress schedules; visit job sites for quality and safety reviews

Assign personnel to projects and communicate expectations, goals, and management aspects of the project

Attend and participate in the weekly operations meetings

Understand quality specifications and requirements, contract terms, and project plans

Work hand-in-hand with other Superintendents, Field Engineers, and Foreman to ensure daily and weekly plans are met and daily timesheets are accurately completed and submitted

Communicate with owner representatives throughout the project
