This role serves as a critical link between field operations and digital design models, ensuring grading, excavation, and paving activities meet project specifications and tolerances.
Key Responsibilities

Grade Verification & Field Layout

  • Verify and maintain grade using GPS rovers, total stations, lasers, and traditional methods.
  • Set and check grade stakes for excavation, subgrade, base, and paving operations.
  • Interpret plans, profiles, cross sections, and digital models to guide field operations.
  • Communicate grade information clearly to equipment operators and field crews.

GPS & Machine Control Support

  • Utilize GPS systems (Trimble, Topcon, Leica) to check and confirm elevations and alignment.
  • Assist with machine control setup, calibration checks, and troubleshooting in the field.
  • Validate GPS machine performance against known control points and benchmarks.
  • Work with the GPS Coordinator to ensure correct models and files are being used onsite.

Survey & Data Coordination

  • Assist in collecting field data and verifying accuracy of digital terrain models (DTMs).
  • Cross-check field conditions against design surfaces and identify discrepancies.
  • Support layout activities using GPS and total station equipment as needed.
  • Maintain field records of grade checks, corrections, and tolerances.

Field Communication & Coordination

  • Collaborate with superintendents, foremen, operators, and survey crews to maintain production and accuracy.
  • Provide real-time feedback to crews to adjust grading operations.
  • Escalate grade or model discrepancies to project leadership and GPS Coordinator.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies and participate in daily safety meetings.
  • Ensure work is performed in compliance with project specifications and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training in surveying or construction preferred.
  • 2–5+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, grading, or survey support.
  • Experience with GPS machine control systems (Trimble, Topcon, Leica) preferred.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret civil plans, grade sheets, and digital models.
  • Familiarity with total stations, laser levels, and grade-checking tools.
