Consignment Inventory Manager information

What is consignment inventory management?

Consignment inventory management involves overseeing goods that are stored at a retailer's location but remain owned by the supplier until sold. The manager tracks inventory levels, sales, and payments to ensure accurate stock control and timely replenishment, often using inventory management software. This approach helps optimize stock availability while minimizing excess inventory costs.

Is inventory control a good career?

Inventory control is a key aspect of supply chain management and is essential for maintaining efficient operations in many industries. Careers in inventory management, including roles like Consignment Inventory Manager, often require skills in data analysis, organization, and use of inventory software. It can offer stable employment opportunities with potential for advancement and specialization.

What are the downsides of consignment?

For a Consignment Inventory Manager, downsides of consignment include the risk of inventory obsolescence and the need for careful tracking to prevent discrepancies. Additionally, it can lead to cash flow challenges since payment is only received after sales, and managing multiple supplier relationships can increase administrative workload.

What qualifications do I need to be an Inventory Controller?

To be an Inventory Controller, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, with many roles preferring or requiring a bachelor's degree in supply chain management, logistics, or business. Strong organizational skills, experience with inventory management software, and attention to detail are essential, along with good communication and problem-solving abilities.

  • Monitor inventory aging, turn rates, and overall inventory health across all locations
  • Analyze market trends and demand to support inventory mix and purchasing decisions
  • Partner with sales leadership to align inventory strategy with revenue goals
  • Develop strategies to improve inventory flow, visibility, and consistency organization-wide

Merchandising & Inventory Presentation

  • Establish and maintain dealership standards for inventory presentation, staging, photography, and online merchandising
  • Ensure all inventory listings are accurate, professional, and optimized for customer engagement
  • Work closely with dealership teams to improve unit readiness and sales presentation

Operational Leadership

  • Maintain oversight of inventory tracking, titles, consignment documentation, and dealership records
  • Ensure consistent and accurate use of Lightspeed and related inventory systems
  • Coordinate transportation, intake, inspections, service scheduling, and inventory movement between locations
  • Partner with Accounting, Sales, Service, and Operations teams to improve inventory processes and accountability

Leadership & Organizational Development

  • Support and guide dealership consignment teams and inventory personnel
  • Develop standardized workflows and best practices across all locations
  • Train teams on inventory procedures, merchandising expectations, and customer experience standards
  • Provide reporting and performance insights to executive leadership
Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience in dealership inventory management, consignment operations, acquisitions, or related leadership roles
  • Strong preference for marine dealership experience
  • Luxury automotive, exotic vehicle, RV, or powersports inventory management experience highly valued
  • Experience working with high-value inventory and customer-facing dealership operations
  • Strong understanding of inventory strategy, valuation, merchandising, and inventory flow
  • Proven ability to build relationships with customers, brokers, and dealership teams
  • Experience using dealership management systems (Lightspeed preferred), CRM platforms, and inventory tools
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-location operational environment

Why Join Boaterโ€™s World Marine Centers?

  • Opportunity to shape inventory strategy across a growing dealership network
  • High-impact leadership role with visibility across the organization
  • Work with premium marine inventory and high-value customer relationships
  • Growing company with long-term expansion plans and operational investment
  • Collaborative leadership environment focused on growth and execution

Ideal Candidate Traits
