The Sedation RN provides direct patient care and procedural nursing support within the Interventional Radiology Center (located in Vestavia) under supervision. The RN ensures safe, high‑quality patient care before, during, and after procedural sedation, maintaining compliance with regulatory, safety, and infection control standards.

The Sedation RN is expected to perform duties consistent with the core values of UCA: Communicate, Collaborate, Adapt, Respect, Excel, Serve.

• Perform pre‑procedure patient assessments including review of medical history, allergies, medications, NPO status, laboratory results, and sedation risk factors.
• Prepare patients for IR and procedural cases utilizing moderate sedation and monitoring protocols.
• Administer and monitor procedural sedation medications per physician order and organizational policy.
• Continuously monitor patient vital signs, oxygenation, cardiac rhythm, airway status, and level of consciousness during procedures.
• Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition and emergency situations.
• Recover and monitor patients post‑procedure until discharge criteria are met.
• Assist physicians during interventional and procedural cases utilizing sterile technique.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EMR relating to sedation, medications, patient monitoring, and recovery.
• Ensure emergency equipment, crash carts, and sedation medications are properly maintained and readily available.
• Collaborate with physicians, radiology staff, anesthesia providers, and clinical leadership to ensure safe and efficient workflow.
• Educate patients and families regarding procedures, sedation, discharge instructions, and follow‑up care.
• Maintain compliance with infection prevention, HIPAA, OSHA, and patient safety standards.
• Assist with inventory and stocking of procedural and emergency supplies as needed.
• Travel between UCA locations as needed.

• Minimum of 2 years of Registered Nurse experience preferred.
• Previous procedural nursing experience preferred.
• Experience in Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, Operating Room, PACU, Endoscopy, or other procedural/sedation environments preferred.
• Moderate sedation experience preferred.
• Willingness to learn urology and interventional procedural workflows.

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Alabama Board of Nursing without lapse.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required or must be obtained within the orientation period.
• Demonstrated sound clinical judgment and competency in patient care.
• Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
• Capability to respond effectively during medical emergencies.
• Proficiency in maintaining sterile technique and infection prevention standards.
• Proficiency with EMR documentation systems and standard office technology.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced procedural environment.
• Strict confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and UCA policies and procedures.
