What is configuration management?

Configuration management is a systematic process for establishing and maintaining consistency of a product’s performance, functional, and physical attributes with its requirements, design, and operational information throughout its life. In IT and software development, it helps track and control changes in software, hardware, documents, and other critical assets. The goal is to ensure that the integrity and traceability of configurations are maintained over time, reducing errors and improving efficiency. This process is essential for organizations to deliver high-quality products and services reliably and repeatably.

To thrive in Configuration Management, you need a solid understanding of configuration control processes, documentation standards, and typically a background in IT, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, or ServiceNow, as well as certifications such as ITIL or CMII, is often required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication help professionals manage changes and maintain accurate records.
