What does a configuration management manager do?

A Configuration Management Manager oversees the processes and tools used to track and control changes in software, hardware, documentation, and other key assets throughout a project's lifecycle. They ensure that all systems remain consistent, reliable, and well-documented by implementing configuration management policies and procedures. Their responsibilities often include managing configuration databases, leading audits, and coordinating with different teams to maintain the integrity of products or systems. This role is critical in industries like IT, engineering, and manufacturing, where maintaining accurate records and version control is essential for quality and compliance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a configuration management manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Configuration Management Manager, you need expertise in configuration management processes, change control, and a relevant technical or engineering background, often supported by a bachelor’s degree or industry certifications like ITIL or CMII.
