Job description

Pathology Office Administrative Assistant

This role will work in the Pathology office within the Laboratory Department performing a variety of administrative tasks to support the assigned clinical function. Additional tasks in performing general work in the Laboratory Department may also occur.

Office duties may include:

  • Accessioning patient reports for additions and corrections to patient information.
  • Preparation of conference cases for pathologists.
  • Handling and tracking incoming and outgoing non-hazardous patient material within the laboratory information system.
  • Receiving and distributing packages and mail throughout the laboratory.
  • Sending and responding to fax requests.
  • Assisting providers and customers over the phone.
  • Filing and organization of non-hazardous patient materials.
  • Managing the scheduling of pathologists.
  • Promote patient standards of accreditation agencies and state licensure requirements.
  • Follows Essentia Health rules and policies to ensure safety and quality.

Laboratory duties may include:

  • Collects specimens through venipuncture or capillary skin puncture and other miscellaneous specimens (Urine, swabs, etc.)
  • Performs specimen processing and handling according to testing requirements to support clinical laboratory testing
  • Performs laboratory testing, when applicable, per accreditation and licensure requirements
  • Participates in training of new employees, students, and other personnel as appropriate
  • Follows Essentia Health rules and policies while handling specimens and equipment to ensure safety and quality

Education Qualifications:

  • Graduate from Medical Laboratory Assistant Program
  • OR Completes an internal Medical Laboratory Assistant training program within 1 year of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Assistant American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification
  • Recent specimen preparation and processing experience
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operators' license
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and basic computer skills

Compensation Range: $19.57 - $29.02
