What are different jobs in concrete work?

There are many different career paths in concrete work. Some of the jobs in the industry are cement pourers, cement laborers, finishers, and masons. Each of these positions works with concrete differently, whether in a home or construction context. For example, a cement pourer or laborer might be responsible for mixing cement while a mason is responsible for creating structures from finished concrete, and a finisher makes sure that the structures a mason creates retain their integrity. Often, a cement mason and a concrete finisher work together to create decorations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a concrete worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Concrete Worker, you need knowledge of concrete mixing, pouring, and finishing techniques, often supported by experience or vocational training in construction. Familiarity with tools such as trowels, screeds, mixers, and laser levels is essential, and certifications like OSHA safety training can be advantageous. Strong physical stamina, attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to follow instructions are vital soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure durable, precise construction work and help maintain safety and efficiency on job sites.

What are some common challenges faced by concrete workers on construction sites, and how can they be managed?

Concrete workers often face challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, ensuring the correct mix and setting of concrete, and meeting tight project deadlines. Managing these challenges involves proper planning, using protective gear, closely following mix specifications, and coordinating effectively with other construction team members. Staying up to date with safety protocols and participating in ongoing training can also help concrete workers maintain quality and safety standards on the job.

What is the difference between Concrete vs Mason?

Both roles often work on similar sites and may require safety training, but their skills and tools differ significantly.

Are concrete jobs hard?

Concrete jobs involve tasks such as mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete, which require physical strength, attention to detail, and knowledge of safety procedures. The work can be physically demanding and may involve working outdoors in various weather conditions, but with proper training and experience, it becomes more manageable. Certifications in safety and technical skills can also improve job performance and safety.

What is the job called when you pour concrete?

The job of pouring concrete is typically called a concrete finisher or concrete worker. These workers operate tools like trowels and screeds to spread and smooth concrete, often working with forms and reinforcement. Certification in safety and knowledge of concrete properties are important for this role.

Job description

Build quality that lasts. Shape infrastructure that serves millions.

At Thompson Pipe Group in Rialto, CA, you’ll be the quality voice inside a fast-moving precast concrete operation. As our Materials QA/QC Technician, you’ll partner closely with Production to validate that every pipe we ship meets rigorous, project-specific standards. Compensation: $23/hr (DOE).

A day in this role

You start your shift on the plant floor, PPE on and clipboard in hand. First stop: verifying overnight production fabrication, test, and inspection reports. Before the first truck loads, you’re in the lab pulling samples for aggregate tests, preparing bar specimens for steel tensile test reports, and coordinating joint assembly test reports for today’s runs. Throughout the day you coach operators who carry QC responsibilities, spot-check cure results, and document anything that needs follow-up. When a project has special specifications, you’re the one aligning the team to those extra quality procedures. You wrap with data entry, sign-offs, and a quick huddle with the supervisor on tomorrow’s priorities.

What you’ll take on
  • Monitor all aspects of quality under the supervision and direction of the supervisor
  • Complete and maintain steel tensile, aggregate, and joint assembly test reports
  • Compile production fabrication, testing, and inspection documentation
  • Assist Production personnel carrying quality control duties
  • Ensure compliance with any additional or special QA procedures required by project specs
  • Pitch in on other tasks as assigned
What you bring
  • ACI Field Grade 1 certification required
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Background in QA or Production within a related industry preferred
  • Familiarity with concrete technology, welding, and NDE/NDT a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Bilingual English/Spanish capability
Physical and work environment
  • Lift up to 50 lbs; stand, walk, and stoop throughout the shift
  • Keep pace with manufacturing requirements and consistent attendance
  • Operate tools and equipment safely; perform strenuous work in outdoor conditions (dust, rain, wind)
  • Comfort using PPE: earplugs, hard hat, steel-toed boots, gloves, safety glasses

Not a warehouse role—this is hands-on precast concrete pipe manufacturing.

Benefits and growth
  • Medical, Vision and Dental, Life Benefits
  • Life & Supplemental Life
  • Company-matched 401(k)
  • Vacation & Sick Leave
  • Training and Development
  • Career Opportunity
  • $1,000 Referral Bonus
