CONCRETE MATERIALS AND LAB SUPERVISOR
Department: Quality Control
Reports To: QC Manager
Employment Type: Hourly
Wage Range: $27.00-$30.00 per hour. Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, skills
The Concrete Materials and Lab Supervisor is responsible for overseeing concrete testing, materials evaluation, mix-design development and qualification, and quality-verification activities. This position leads laboratory personnel and works closely with the Batch Plant, Production, Quality Control, and Engineering teams to support consistent concrete performance, compliance, and continuous improvement.
Position Type and Expected Hours
  • Full-time, permanent position
  • Start time: 8 a.m., Monday through Friday
  • Overtime and Saturday work may be required based on operational needs

Responsibilities:
Laboratory and Testing Operations
  • Supervise the daily operations of the concrete laboratory, including fresh and hardened concrete testing.
  • Ensure testing is performed accurately and in accordance with applicable ASTM, PCI, NPCA, ACI, customer, and project-specific requirements.
  • Establish and maintain testing schedules that support production requirements, mix-design qualifications, product development, and project timelines.
  • Review, validate, and approve laboratory test results, reports, certifications, and related documentation.
  • Ensure testing activities are completed accurately and within required timelines.
  • Investigate out-of-specification or unexpected test results and lead root-cause analyses and corrective actions.
  • Maintain organized and traceable laboratory records.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, certified, and available for use.
  • Establish and maintain schedules for required calibration, inspection, maintenance, and certification activities.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of laboratory supplies, consumables, molds, testing equipment, and other materials.
  • Identify equipment deficiencies and recommend repairs, replacements, or upgrades.

Team Leadership and Supervision
  • Supervise, train, coach, and mentor concrete testing technicians and laboratory personnel.
  • Assign daily responsibilities and prioritize testing activities based on production and project requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate laboratory coverage and the timely completion of testing.
  • Establish clear expectations for technical accuracy, documentation, safety, productivity, and professional conduct.
  • Assist with performance evaluations and support employee development and technical progression.
  • Identify training needs and provide or coordinate appropriate technical training.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and professional responsibility.
  • Enforce safe work practices and laboratory safety standards.

Mix-Design Development and Qualification
  • Assist with the development, optimization, and qualification of concrete mix designs to achieve the required strength, durability, workability, finish, and production performance.
  • Lead trial batching, testing, evaluation, and validation of new and revised mix designs.
  • Ensure mix designs comply with customer specifications and applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Troubleshoot mix-performance issues in coordination with Production, Engineering, Quality Control, and material suppliers.
  • Monitor mix performance and recommend adjustments based on laboratory data and production results.
  • Maintain current mix-design records, approvals, supporting documentation, and revision control.
  • Support the development and implementation of more efficient and cost-effective mix designs without compromising performance requirements.

Quality Control and Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with internal quality systems, customer specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Quality Control and Production teams to address mix-performance issues.
  • Support audits, inspections, and customer or third-party reviews.
  • Maintain accurate testing documentation, calibration records, and quality logs.
  • Coordinate required equipment calibrations and annual water testing.

Materials Management and Evaluation
  • Monitor and document the properties of raw materials, including aggregates, cement, admixtures, and supplementary cementitious materials.

Equipment and Facility Management
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and certified.
  • Manage laboratory inventory, consumables, and testing supplies.
  • Recommend equipment improvements, repairs, replacements, or upgrades as needed.
  • Maintain digital and physical testing records in accordance with applicable requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three to five years of concrete testing or materials experience preferred.
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician certification required.
  • Experience with concrete testing, concrete materials, mix designs, or laboratory operations.
  • Working knowledge of ASTM, ACI, PCI, and NPCA standards and requirements applicable to concrete.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, train, and develop employees.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Hands-on concrete mix-design and trial-batching experience preferred.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The anticipated wage range for this position is $27.00-$30.00 per hour. The final starting rate will be determined based on the selected candidate's relevant experience, qualifications, certifications, and business needs.

Working Conditions
  • Indoor/outdoor precast plant or construction yard environment.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, heavy machinery, and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday (8-10+ hours)
  • Ability to work in a heavy industrial, manufacturing, or outdoor environment with exposure to varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as required in a production setting
  • Ability to safely navigate uneven surfaces, production floors, and casting bed areas
  • Must be able to wear and properly use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, steel/composite toe boots, gloves, and hearing protection
  • Ability to work in environments with exposure to dust, noise, vibrations, and moving mechanical equipment
  • Must be able to visually inspect work areas, equipment, and product quality (close and distance vision required)
  • Ability to hear and communicate effectively in a high-noise production environment
  • Must be able to respond quickly to alarms, hazards, or safety incidents
  • Ability to climb ladders and access elevated work areas when needed
  • Capability to perform physical tasks safely while maintaining awareness of surroundings and safety protocols
