What Are the Qualifications to Get a Concept Artist Internship?

The qualifications you need to get a concept art internship depend on the type of internship for which you are applying. Some internships are open only to current students in graphic design, video game development, or fine arts. These internships typically do not pay, but you can get school credit for participating. Your school may already have an agreement in place with certain companies, so talk to your professors and department heads about opportunities. Other concept art internships are available to recent graduates of programs, and they may be paid or unpaid. While these positions are temporary, they may lead to a full-time job. In addition to education, you should have excellent creative skills and good interpersonal communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Concept Artist Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Concept Artist Intern, you need a solid understanding of drawing fundamentals, visual storytelling, and design principles, often demonstrated through a strong art portfolio and relevant coursework. Familiarity with digital painting software such as Adobe Photoshop, Procreate, or Corel Painter is essential, and knowledge of 3D tools or animation basics can be advantageous. Creativity, openness to feedback, and effective communication help interns contribute fresh ideas while learning collaboratively. These skills are crucial for producing compelling visual concepts that align with project goals and support the creative team's vision.

What types of projects and collaboration can I expect during a Concept Artist Internship?

As a Concept Artist Intern, you’ll typically work on a variety of creative projects, such as developing character designs, environments, and props for games, films, or animation. Interns often collaborate closely with art directors, 3D modelers, and other artists to refine concepts and bring visual ideas to life. You may participate in brainstorming sessions, receive feedback during art reviews, and iterate on your work to meet project goals. This collaborative environment is both challenging and rewarding, giving you firsthand experience in the workflow of a professional art team.

What is a Concept Artist Internship?

A Concept Artist Internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, where you work under the guidance of experienced artists to develop visual ideas and designs for characters, environments, or props in creative industries like video games, film, or animation. Interns learn industry workflows, contribute to projects, and build a professional portfolio. This role is ideal for aspiring concept artists seeking hands-on experience, mentorship, and networking opportunities in a real-world studio setting.
