Field Computer Technician (Part-Time)

AcademIT is a nonprofit. We provide IT support services exclusively to other nonprofits. Environment and Fit

We take our work seriously, but ourselves less so. Ultimately, we’re serving organizations that make the community better. So ‘hard work’ doesn’t buy your boss a boat, or make shareholders richer (we don’t have any). It means kids have a better education, hungry people are fed, disadvantaged people are given opportunities. So we all put in a lot of effort, because we want to, and because it feels awesome to make a difference because of that effort. But we have fun, we’re all nerds, we all geek out over gear or projects or math. It isn’t a part of the ‘workplace’ specifically, but the employees have organically formed video game teams and guilds, done tabletop gaming, and similar activities with their coworkers over the years.

It’s a great place for self-directed people. We have SOPs, we have guidelines, but the needs of a financial assistance organization in the city aren’t the same as a small school way out in the suburbs. So you need some discretion and discernment, understanding where we’re all trying to go, but that there may not be an existing procedure to get there. That’s great for some people, and terrifying to others.

That also means you have to be really good at communicating. Not just that you can write a correct sentence, or be polite and professional. Communicating is about knowing that something needs to be communicated, doing so, and taking responsibility that everyone understands. And doing that over and over again. That always leads the the best outcomes.

This is an excellent opportunity for college students and folks early in their career, and folks who want to be semi-retired but keep busy, and stay involved in IT and problem-solving, while also supporting their communities.

Field Support Technician (Part-Time)

Work Details

- Part-time position (12 - 24 hours per week, weekdays during the day)

- On-site support at local client locations

Job Summary

As a Field Support Technician, you will be the face of our organization, providing on-site end-user support to our nonprofit clients. You'll troubleshoot and resolve a wide range of technical issues, ensuring that our clients can focus on their important work without technology obstacles. This role requires a blend of technical expertise and excellent interpersonal skills.

Specific Duties

1. Provide on-site technical support for hardware, software, and network issues

2. Set up and configure new computer systems, peripherals, and software

3. Perform basic network troubleshooting and maintenance tasks

4. Assist users with various applications and provide basic training

5. Document all support activities and maintain accurate records

6. Collaborate with the remote support team to resolve complex issues

7. Adhere to and promote best practices in IT security and data protection

8. Participate in ongoing professional development and skills training

Soft Skills

- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users

- Strong customer service orientation and patience

- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively

- Adaptability and quick learning in diverse client environments

- Empathy and understanding of nonprofit organizations' unique challenges

Desirable Experience and Qualities

- Associate's degree in IT or related field, or equivalent 2 years college experience. Certification equivalents are welcome

- 1+ year of experience in IT support roles

- Note that candidates with significantly more experience are welcome, and we have many employees with decades of knowledge.

- Familiarity with common operating systems (Windows, macOS, iOS, ChromeOS) and productivity software

- Understanding of networking concepts

- Problem-solving skills and attention to detail

- Passion for technology and helping others

- Interest in or experience with nonprofit organizations

- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
