Job description

Position: Director of IT Infrastructure

Department: Information Technology

Report to: Chief Information Officer

Appointment: Full-time, 40 hours per week (12-month on campus position)

Status: Exempt

Primary Purpose and Function:

The Director of IT Infrastructure is responsible for establishing the vision and strategy for the overall operation and support of the network, telecommunications, and server systems teams for Bradley University. The Director will oversee the administrators of the Network/Communications and Systems Administration areas and make technology decisions in the planning, development, research, and management of infrastructure resources throughout the university. The Director will work with customers, IT team members, and the Chief Information Officer to create strategic and project plans, establish budgets, identify funding sources, and oversee the implementation of infrastructure-related projects that meet the needs of the university. They will work to fulfill the goal of advancing IT beyond a technology service provider to that of a partner and trusted advisor to the institution.

Key Functions: Strategic Planning, Management, Liaison, Compliance and Standards Development, Procurement

Job duties performed for the above function:

  • Establish the vision and strategy for the networking, telecommunications, and system administration teams to ensure technology infrastructure resources meet the short and long-term needs of the university
  • Provides leadership, direction, technical assistance, and expertise to staff in the management of network, telecommunications, and server systems technologies. Provides leadership and mentorship to the System Administration and the Networking teams.
  • Develops and implements complete project schedules to ensure required dates are met. Must be able to generate and manage detailed projects plans and establish timelines to ensure milestones are achieved using industry standard tools. Ensure that progress is reported and made with both projects and other department/university initiatives pertaining to the enterprise infrastructure and the strategic goals of the university.
  • Represents IT on various governance committees. Supports the CIO in communication, consultation, and collaboration with academic departments, administration, students, information technology personnel and advisory groups. Assists the CIO in the development and revision of the IT Strategic Roadmap.
  • Works collaboratively with the university's Chief Information Security Officer to ensure all technological infrastructure resources and practices adhere to information security and regulatory standards. Assists with university-wide information security initiatives.
  • Collaborate and negotiate with vendors to improve the institution's products and services and obtain aggressive pricing.
  • Assists in the strategic planning for the future of information technology across the university and revising the technology refresh plan annually.
  • Prepares department budgets and monitors expenses. Provides input and assists in preparing the annual information technology budget for the university.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of all datacenters, network and telecommunications equipment owned by the university.
  • Anticipates developments in the field to support continuous improvement.
  • Fosters an environment for collaborative teamwork. Manages team interactions to obtain optimal team and department performance.
  • Performs other duties as required in support of the IT Department or assigned by the CIO/CISO.

Professional Qualifications: Possesses excellent written and oral communication skills and a thorough understanding of the system administration and networking environment. Possesses proven organizational, planning, project management, and leadership skills. Holds general knowledge of information technology trends and practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience in an IT infrastructure role with increasing leadership responsibilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems, or equivalent knowledge and experience.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the system administration and networking environment.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Possess proven organizational, planning, project management, and leadership skills.
  • Effective in managing operations with excellent customer service.
  • Hold general knowledge of information technology trends and practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in higher education.
